The older my boys get, the more I fall in love with photographing families in this stage.

The baby on your hip. The toddler who only wants Dad. The way everyone is moving at once while Mom is still holding everything together. The little in between moments that don't feel dramatic while they're happening, but somehow end up meaning the most later.

Family sessions with me are not about forcing perfect smiles or expecting your children to sit still for an hour. They're about making space for connection, movement, play, cuddles, snack breaks, and all the little bits of chaos in between.

And Dads - this also means you don't need to spend the entire session trying to get your children to "look over here and smile" 😁 I know it can feel stressful when kids are busy or just not listening perfectly, but those aren't the moments I'm trying to eliminate. They're often the moments that make your images feel the most real and full of life.

I'll guide you the entire way so your only job is the be present with your family. šŸ¤

Lately I’ve been really loving all of the in-home newborn sessions. There’s just something about photographing a family in their own space that feels so personal and relaxed - toddlers wandering in and out, baby snuggled up in the nursery, everyone a little more comfortable because they’re just home. šŸ¤

For families with older kids, in-home sessions can sometimes feel a bit easier. Siblings can go play, have snacks, watch a show for a bit, then jump back in for photos without parents feeling like they need to constantly keep them sitting nicely for two to three hours straight. It takes the pressure off.

And you don’t need to worry about ā€œhaving everything.ā€ I still bring dresses from the client closet, newborn and toddler outfits, wraps, accessories, and a bassinet setup so the session still has that soft, cohesive look.

In-home sessions also naturally lean a little more candid and connection-focused. The images tend to feel more lived in and personal, which I love so much. Buttttt… I still absolutely love studio newborn sessions too - especially for first time parents.

There’s something really nice about just showing up with your baby while everything is already set up and ready for you. No worrying about tidying the house, clearing windows for light, or getting things ā€œphoto ready.ā€ The studio is quiet, cozy, neutral, and calm - and a lot of parents end up finishing getting ready and then just relaxing on the couch while I soothe and photograph baby.

Studio sessions are usually slightly more posed and refined overall, with plain backdrops, less visual distraction, and very consistent lighting throughout the gallery. In-home sessions rely more on the available natural light in your house, so things can vary a bit depending on window light, wall colours, decor, etc.

Really there’s no wrong choice - they’re just different. I’ve just noticed over the years that families with multiple little ones often feel way more relaxed at home, while brand new parents usually love the calm, easy studio experience. And I love being able to offer both. 😊🄰

One year birthday sessions are my favourite kind of chaos šŸ¤

Nobody tells you that milestone sessions are basically a full-body workout for moms. One second your baby is smiling sweetly in a basket, the next they’re speed-crawling toward the edge of the set while mom is just out of frame doing catching duties šŸ˜…

And somehow in the middle of all that chaos, we end up with these. The little looks, the baby rolls, the tiny teeth. I just love photographing this stage so much šŸ¤

I met this mama about 15 years ago when we worked together in my early 20s, and now here we are… me photographing her third baby boy. šŸ’›

I’ve photographed all three of her boys as newborns now, which feels so sweet. There’s something really special about watching someone you’ve known for so many years grow into such an incredible mom. She is so patient, calm, and loving with her boys, and you can just feel how adored they all are. And dad is just as wonderful - so involved, so gentle, and clearly so proud of his family.

Their newest little guy is already so lucky to be part of this crew. It was such an honour getting to capture another chapter for them. šŸ¤

Unpopular opinion:
Studio family sessions are often easier than outdoor ones.

No weather stress.
No bugs.
No racing the sunset with tired kids.

Just soft light, a calm space, and your family exactly as you are right now.

Sometimes the simplest setting creates the most meaningful portraits.

If you love the idea of a relaxed session without the chaos of weather or chasing toddlers through a field… the studio might be perfect for you.
