When traveling to Yellowknife to chase the northern lights, the magic doesnโ€™t stop after sunrise.
Winter days offer incredible photo opportunities too, like sundogs (also known as parhelia). We have been lucky enough to witness them a few times on crisp, cold days.
These โ€œmock sunsโ€ appear on either side of the sun when light is refracted through ice crystals at a 22-degree angle.
And as a bonus? Getting to experience it all while standing on an ice road makes it even more unforgettable.
Pack your DSLR, your warm clothes, you camera parka and head up North! Explore Canada in winter.

Strong G3-class geomagnetic storms predicted!

A G3 magnetic storm warning was issued by NOAA yesterday for Dec 9 (+/- 24 hours...). This may result in KP6 to KP7 activity.
Clear skies are needed and may be hard to find in December in the northern hemisphere but one can hope!

This picture from the NOAA Space weather prediction centre shows how far south aurora can be seen during a G3. Check the link to their page for more tips on aurora viewing.

Aurora Borealis over Bowen Island, BC โ€” captured from Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver.
These were taken early on November 11 around 6:30 pm, just before the clouds rolled in. During this G4 geomagnetic storm, the pink hues were clearly visible to the naked eye โ€” such an incredible sight!
Hopefully, some of you had clear skies and got to enjoy your own northern lights show that night. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒ• Mark your calendars! A ๐˜๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐˜€๐—ฒ is coming to North America on March 13-14, 2024 - an event where the Earth's shadow will cast the moon into a deep, reddish hue.

Have you ever witnessed a Back in November 2022, we were in the Northwest Territories, Canada for just that. To escape the clouds, we drove an hour east of Yellowknife - and it was so worth it. Watching the moonlight fade from a bright glow, dimming the aurora, to a ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ธ ๐˜€๐—ธ๐˜† ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฎ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜๐˜€ was unforgettable. And the unexpected highlight? A ๐—น๐˜†๐—ป๐˜… casually strolling across the frozen lake (of course, before I had my zoom lens ready!).

๐Ÿ“ธ These shots are from the early morning of Nov 8, 2022:
1๏ธโƒฃ Composite of 4 phases of the eclipse: zoomed in on the moon, though the aurora couldnโ€™t be captured with these settings.
2๏ธโƒฃ At totality: a wide-angle view where the moon becomes a small red dot against the aurora and star-filled sky.
3๏ธโƒฃ Before the eclipse: a moonlit landscape with the aurora washed out by the moon's brightness.

Who else is planning to catch the March 14th eclipse? Let me know if you're chasing the night sky magic!

March offers long nights for extended aurora viewing, with the added boost of the ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฒ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜… ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿต - a time when Earthโ€™s tilt helps intensify solar wind activity. This year is even more exciting as we're at the ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜…๐—ถ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—บ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—–๐˜†๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฑ, meaning the sun is at its most active, increasing the chances of strong displays. For the best experience, avoid the full moon on March 14 and aim for darker nights. Iโ€™d plan to go between ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿด ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ต - the moon rises at 1:09 am on March 18 and at 2:53 am the following night, staying low on the horizon. After that, nights will be dark until the end of the month - perfect for capturing those vibrant auroras against frozen landscapes. And yes, itโ€™s ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฑ - with nighttime temperatures averaging -23ยฐC but thatโ€™s part of the northern adventure. Plus, driving on the Dettah Ice Road under a sky full of dancing lights? An unforgettable experience.

It's a Wrap!

2024 has been an incredibly busy year for us! Weโ€™ve been hard at work transforming a decommissioned ambulance into a 4x4 expedition vehicle. With most of the exterior work done, we took our Ambulander for a test driveโ€”a 11,000 km round trip to the US to witness the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Along the way, we visited several National Parks.
On May 10, we experienced a G3 magnetic storm that brought the breathtaking aurora borealis to Southern BCโ€”what a show!
And in September, we were fortunate to see humpback whales and sea otters (a first for me) off the coast of British Columbia.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our customers and fellow photographers for supporting our small business! Your encouragement and support mean the world to us. ๐Ÿ™

Here are our highlights of 2024 in pictures:
1- Boondocking in our Ambulander
2- Great Salt Lake and the Spiral Jetty, Utah
3- Arches National Park, Utah
4- Hoodoos in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
5- Diamond ring during the total solar eclipse, Arkansas
6- Carlsbad Cavers National Park, New Mexico
7/8- Aurora Borealis, British Columbia
9- Humpback whale tail, Ucluelet BC
10- Sea Otter, Ucluelet BC
