A couple of wildlife landscape photos from earlier this year to close out 2025. Social media is all about the tight portraits for wildlife but in these photos I wanted to capture the precarious feeling of these Murres huddled together on the cliffside with waves crashing below. A big shout-out to for being an advocate for wildlife habitat and landscape shots and not just the tight portraits we all love. A big thanks to my wife as well for being there to remind me while in the field to zoom out and capture more of the scene.

It took 17,000 steps but I was able to find these two roosting owls yesterday morning. The Eastern Screech-Owl was quite well camouflaged sitting in the tree cavity while the Barred Owl prefered the denser branches. Unfortunately the Black-backed Woodpecker evaded us all morning so it'll have to wait for another day.

Finally posting something that's not a bird! A Silvery Blue that I photographed in my backyard. I was able to take a decent single photo with my macro lens and flash setup, but unfortunately it never opened up its wings to show off its eponymous silvery blue colour. It was so cool tI capture the pollen covering the eyes of this butterfly and serves as a good reminder that bees are not the only pollinators out there.

White-breasted Nuthatches are a common sight in Ontario, but I hadn't had much luck photographing Red-breasted Nuthatches until my visit to Fort Whyte Alive earlier this month. If you live in Winnipeg and haven't visited Fort Whyte for a while, now is a great time as fall migration is underway.

We had a great morning at the 7am Early Birding session at Fort Whyte Alive yesterday! It was quite a chilly morning resulting in misty conditions over the water.
The birds were slow to get started that morning due to the chilly weather but we were able to see a couple Sharp-shinned Hawks, a Bald Eagle, and I was finally able to photograph a Belted Kingfisher! We were able to add a couple other birds to our life lists as well. Fall migration is definitely a great time to get outside.

Although it wasn't our original plan, I turned our entire time on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula into a birding excursion. We got some great views of both the European Shags and Great Cormorant featured in this reel.

Unfortunately we were late in the breeding season and they had already fledged the nests we saw along the cliff sides.

Shout-out to and at for the location tips to get these birds.

The Murres at Bird Rock were great subjects to photograph. It was the beginning of June and they were just beginning to nest, although their nests are basically non-existent with their eggs being laid directly onto the cliff edges.
If you're looking for your next travel destination, then consider something domestic and check out Newfoundland and the rest of the East Coast.

With the fall migration I've notice 3 distinct Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in my area. The first is shown in both photos above and I suspect she's a mature female as she is the most dominant. She has no streaking on her throat and has a golden-green back.

I've also photographed a second bird that I suspect is an immature female as it's less competitive and gets chased away. She has faint tan streaks on her throat, an emerald green back, and you'll see her in a future post.

The third hummingbird I have not been able to photograph yet but is definitely an immature male as he has a single red feather on his throat. He's a sneaky one and comes by when the dominant female is not around to bother him.

We can have great photography opportunities right in our own backyards. Ruby-throated hummingbirds have begun migration in Southern Ontario and I was able to capture this frequent visitor to my backyard yesterday. I saw this female zipping between the wildflowers, perching on branches, and visiting my feeders. I struggled to capture hummingbirds in the past but was able to get these just before
