Katelynn (my niece) and Ray got engaged, and I took photos for them in the lovely autumn colours at Valley View Park. It's the kind of place where love always seems a little more real, especially in the golden colours of an October afternoon. The season has been rushing past, and sometimes seems that life does do. Keeping your heart ever closer to the surface makes the rush slow down and mean so much more. At least, it's always worked for me.

Candid humanity is where so much of the joy lies for me. These photos from Alyssa and Jacob's wedding in Upper Granville (Nova Scotia) inhabit exactly the sort of heart I aim to capture, sudden moments rushed by quickly are what mean most remembered. Backyards are the best, where late afternoon light streaks gently into evening, and all the beauty of the day gets a chance to shine. I took Makayla and Dylan down by the banks in Wilmot, as the peak of autumn rushed these upper reaches of Annapolis River. Under leaves that fall by the moment, always somewhere from some direction, like the drift of rain itself. We stayed until the sky opened, and clouds came crashing down. I've always defined love by how we see ourselves in nature.

Ryan and Megara got married at Kentville's old Cornwallis Inn, where the brick structure still stands strong, and a colourful mural plays well with early autumn shades. For every wedding, I think in terms of surroundings, how it was and not how I mean to make it. The joy is in reflecting exactly who we are in the most honest sense.

Another shot from Ryan and Megara's wedding! A lot of what I see at a wedding comes from instances barely noticed, moments frozen as they rush on quickly to the next one. In more than 10 years as the fly on the wall of weddings, I've been surrounded by some of the most energetic and passionate moments you could imagine in a true love story. I look for the warmth, the gentle humanity of the moment. All of my heart, all of the time. I've got the experience to be aware of every little thing as it happens, and the artistic passion to capture the feeling.

Experience means confidence – you can be confident that I won't miss a thing, and I can be relaxed while doing it. Over the past decade, wedding photography has taken me to every corner of Nova Scotia, capturing a wide and wild range of incredibly beautiful days. I go for honest and natural, but gentle and dreamlike. Deep depth of field and vibrant, true to life colours. No photoshop, no flash photography – this is life as it was, in all its beauty. Telling the truth about your memories.
