The white griz Nakoda

Two weeks ago I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to photograph this incredible creature. I took these images while working for Parks Canada, after phoning in the sighting to the warden and making sure people remained in their vehicles and gave the bears their space. I've never been one to stop for wildlife on the highway, understanding the dangers of familiarizing wild animals with humans. However, I obviously acquired these images by doing just that. I just ask that if you are lucky enough to see bears within our National parks or anywhere else, that you give them the space they need and deserve. Slow down, take your photo and carry on. And never get out of your vehicle. This is for the safety of the bear as well as your own.

Nakoda means "friend or ally" in the native language of three indigenous groups in the area (bearspaw, Chiniki and Wesley), and is white in colour not due to albinism, but because of a natural color phase variation. This is very rare and has apparently never been seen before in the Rocky Mountains. I'm hoping that it soon leaves the dandelion feasting grounds beside the highway for the quiet seclusion of the backcountry.

I won't be wasting too much time in printing these images for the collection. Send me a message if you're interested in a print!

A big thank you to BCA Tours Inc. for bringing me along on their final run of the season. Our guides Danny & Georgia were incredible hosts, cooks, interpreters and sources of great encouragement in times of fatigue and hunger. I cannot recommend this trail and BCA Tours enough, so if you've been dreaming of this experience then there's really no where else you need to look. Check out their website at http://www.bcatours.com/ for 2019 tour dates of the West Coast trail, North Coast trail and many more.

First snow on the shores of Emerald. After the extended summer we had in Vancouver it's hard to believe that this is what the Rockies looked like three weeks ago. It's looking a lot like winter in them hills ❄️
