The farm life is pretty crazy. With field work being so weather dependent, when the conditions are right, it’s go-time. You never know how long it’ll last. And the worry doesn’t stop just because the seeds are in the ground.

This year, a wet spring resulted in a late planting season. Then, conditions became so dry, you couldn’t go to the field without being covered in dust. Finally, this weekend, we got some much needed rain.

Here’s to the farmers who’ve been working crazy hours these past couple months, and who will continue to work so hard over the next several months.

Happy !

Did you know that 97% of Canadian farms are family-owned and operated? How amazing is that?!

Today (and every day) we recognize the hardworking men and women who grow and raise our food. Farming is not a 9-5 job. There are no paid vacations, no sick days, snow days, or days off.

So how can we help support farmers and their families? Here are just a few ways:

- When buying dairy, look for the blue cow logo! This means the milk used is 100% Canadian dairy!
-Support co-ops and small Canadian businesses! Some of my favourites include Organic Meadow and Little Brown Cow Dairy.
-Reach out to local farmers to learn more about the Canadian Ag industry! Farmers love what they do.
-And so much more!

How will you show your support for ?

From sun up, to sun down.

The boys had been out in the field all day. The sun was still above the horizon, as I carried my cardboard box containing some tinfoil-wrapped plates, mason jars, and a couple old cream cheese containers.

For some of you, this may not mean much, but for me, this was second nature. My dad had walked into the house around 6pm, letting us know that the field work was going ahead, and they wouldn’t be able to stop for dinner. We dashed around the kitchen, making up plates of mashed potatoes, sausage, and sweet corn. Grabbing a couple of mason jars, we poured in some milk and chocolate syrup, giving it a good mix. My mom packed some homemade apple crisp, wrapped the plates in tinfoil and a towel, and put everything in a box. I ran out to the truck with my dad, and off we went to the field, supper and camera in tow.

This thanksgiving weekend, take some time to thank the farmers.

While many get a long weekend away from their jobs, farmers will be hard at work, to provide food for their families and yours. They will be out in their barns, tending to their animals, and out in their fields, harvesting their crops.

If you ate today, thank a farmer. If you are a farmer, thank you!

I almost missed planting season completely this year. As many of you know, when it's time, it's time! Thankfully, I managed to catch the tail end of things when I was last home.
