This is a passage, which opens Dr. Lorinda Spooner’s Examining Room. It reminds us that behind every statistic is a human being with a story we may never fully know.

Dr. Spooner’s work is a raw, unflinching look at the human cost of the opioid crisis, drawing from her 30 years of experience in primary care and addiction medicine. Through her often, heartbreaking work in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside, she captures the reality of the front lines with a poet’s eye and a physician’s heart.

Examining Room is a masterclass in empathy, teaching us that the most radical act we can perform is to withhold judgment and simply listen.

We do not own the earth beneath our feet; we belong to it. In the wake of the devastating wildfires, we must remember our sacred role as guardians and kin to the land.

May we hold in our hearts the people displaced, the wildfire searching for refuge, the firefighters standing in courage, and every living thing touched by loss.

We spend so much time mourning imagined futures that we forget life is still waiting for us in the present.

This Sunday, I’m reflecting on the 'scripts' we follow and the 'blue light' we chase. My new piece, The Blue Light Lure, is now live on Substack. It’s a look at self-abandonment, the exhaustion of maintaining a facade, and the necessary, often painful, return to our own truth.
