"ROUNING THE BIG 10"
ROCKY MOUNTAINEER
SOMEWHERE IN COLORADO.

In June 2023, Michelle got us booked on The Rocky Mountineer, Rockies To Red Rocks train

This is a lucury3 day train journey from Denver Colorado through The Rockies to Moab Utah with an overnight stay in Glenwood Springs Colorado.

It is fabulous.

This portion of the trip is called The Big 10 Curve that winds up a steep grade that, if it was straight, the train would not be able to ascend.

This a view of the train I wanted to capture before we even boarded.

"FAITH ABANDONED"
BODIE STATE PARK
BODIE, CALIFORNIA

This is the interior of the old church in Bodie, California.

There isn't much colour left in the old town but, I found this a fascinating image.

This shot is not crooked, the building is old and unstable and you can see how and where it is sagging and sinking.

Overall, a very poignant image of times gone by.

This is looking down towards the old church in Bodie, imagining the townsfolk parading in for Sunday Service.

Bodie is fabulous and a photographer's dream.

"WHAT ONCE WAS"
BODIE STATE PARK
BODIE, CALIFORNIA

BODIE was a mining village that was deserted and abandoned in the mid 20th Century and left in its state of decay

In 1962, it was opened as a state park and remains in what they call a state of "arrested decay, meaning that they do not restore my structure, they do not move or destroy anything but they do what they can to maintain the park and buildings as they are.

They do really good work to preserve this place and it makes for a wonderful trip into the past. It is haunting

"FROM THE HEADLANDS"
THE MARIN HEADLANDS
MARIN COUNTY CALIFORNIA

I had been to San Francisco twice before and I love the city but, I had always wanted to get to this side of the bay.

On the final day of the trip Michelle and I took in April 2022 our friend Lyss DeThomas was taking us back to SF Airport and, along the way, took us here.

This is The Matin Headlands and it is gorgeous, with some stunning view of the city and the bay.

There is a very nice walking trail here that is quite hilly but worth every step.

This was a wonderful farewell to the city.

"MICUELLE AMONG THE GIAHTS"
HENRY COWELL STATE PARK
REDWOOD FOREST
FULTON, CALIFORNIA

This was Michelle's first time being among the Redwoods (I have been to the forests before, many years ago) and she was awestruck.

We didn't have a lot of time here as we had whale watching tickets later that afternoon do, we were only able to walk a short way into the forest.

What you see here is Michelle standing on thee path between the trees, soaking in their majesty.

The lighting was difficult with the uneven shadows cast by these giants so, I am pretty happy with this photo.

"THE BREACH"
HUMPBACK WHALE
M8NTEREY, CALIFORNIA

Michelle and I had been to this very spot back in 2010 on a whale watching trip and saw exactly 0 whales and were quite disappointed.

Fast forward to April 2022 when we returned, thanks to our dear friend Lyss DeThomas being our road trip your guide and generous host during our stay, when we boarded another tour boat and headed out in the bay.

This day would be vastly different from our previous trip.

On this day, we witnessed a Humpback cow swimming alongside the boat with her calf, we sailed through a pod of dolphins and a number of whales.

Then this happened and I was ready. Along with having the camera pointed at the right spot (a happy accident) and having the settings where I needed them, this magnificent creature made my day.

But, that wasn't all. We saw another dozen or so breaches during the rest of the trip.

Even the naturalists/guides on the boat said that we would, likely, never see a day like that again.

It was unforgettable.

"SEA LIONS IN THE SUNLIGHT"
PIER 39
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

This was my first real photo outing with my "big lens" and, just as I approached this spot, these 2 beautiful Sra Lions seemed to pose for me and I caught this shot with the Birgit light from the sun and the water glistening off if their fur.

This is one of my favourite places in California although, sadly, much of it is now abandoned due to rising rents.

That is sad.

BIXBY BRIDGE
BIG SUR, CALIFORNIA

This famous bridge is along Highway 1 along the coast in California.

This is a 22 mile stretch that runs along some of the most beautiful coastline I've ever seen.

Well, with spring on the horizon, it's getting time to get the cameras out and get shooting.

With any luck I won't have any foot issues this year.

EVERYWHERE A SIGN"
OLD QUEBEC LOWER TOWN

Nikon D5100
Nikon 18-55 f3.5-5.6

One of the many things I love about this old city is the variety and artistry of the storefronts and signage.

This is on the Rue du Petit Champlain in Lower Town which is the cutest street in the city.

Hint to any tourist is any city: never forget to look up...or down.
