A very special thanks to Shirley Blair for taking the time to share our book “The Valley Knows Her Name” with the students of , from Tsum Valley.

Shirley has given years of service to SMD with deep dedication, helping support the children, staff, senior students, volunteers, donors, and many of the school’s long-term needs. Her work has touched generations of Himalayan children who came to SMD in search of education, care, and a stronger future.

This is one of the reasons our book carries such deep meaning for us. The Valley Knows Her Name is not only a book about Tsum Valley; it is also connected to the future of its children.

Profits from the book will directly support the Tsum Valley Education Fund, which helps strengthen education at the new Compassion School in Lamagaun. The hope is that more children can receive strong education closer to home, surrounded by their own community, culture, and valley.

Seeing this book in the hands of students from Tsum feels very meaningful. Their stories, their families, and their valley are at the heart of why this work matters.

Thank you, Shirley, and thank you to SMD, for holding space for these children with such care.

The teachers at Chumling School shared a few photos today from the distribution of some basic school supplies we had left for the students.. stationery, backpacks, water bottles, and a few small essentials.

Many thanks to the principal and everyone at the school for taking the time to organize everything and for sharing the photos with us. It genuinely made our day. 🙏

In 2024, we carried a dummy photo book to Tsum Valley, a simple sample filled with portraits and scenes we had taken over the years. Wherever we opened it, people leaned in with joy and curiosity. They searched for their own faces, their family members, their neighbours, and people they had loved and lost.

To see people looking at themselves in a book, as people seen with dignity, beauty, and importance, was deeply moving to us. Since that moment, we could not wait to return with the real book. Not just a photo book, but a book that carries their stories.

This time, when we brought “The Valley Knows Her Name” to Tsum, the emotion was even greater. People were overjoyed to see their valley, their faces, their names, and their lives held with such care. It felt less like showing them a book, and more like returning something that had always belonged to them.

“The Valley Knows Her Name” is now available for pre-order for those who wish to be part of this story and support the journey behind it. Link below>>

By mid-morning, Tórshavn was full. Streets that were quiet a few days earlier were now packed, and most people were wearing traditional Faroese dress.

Ólavsøka brings people from across the islands into the capital. The focus stays within the community. People show up, take part, and spend the day together.

At the harbor, rowing races drew most of the attention. The effort was clear on every face. Some won, some didn’t, but the reaction from the crowd didn’t change much. It stayed collective.

Now settled back in Kathmandu and reflecting on our time in Tsum Valley. This past month has given us so many experiences, so many emotions, so much meaning. It has seen us welcomed back to Tsum’s spectacular mountain landscape, to its beautiful people, and into their homes and their lives. It saw us in Lamagaun for the opening of the new school, allowing us to share special moments with the smiling kids and their proud parents. And, importantly, it provided us the opportunity to sit with Lama Pasang and his school team to discuss how Steve Fagan Photography can best commit its long-term support for the education of Tsum’s children. We offer our sincerest gratitude to the nuns at Gumba Lungtang, to Mingmar and Appi, to the men who helped us carry our heavy loads, to the school team at Lamagaun, to Tanzin Gyalzen Tsumpa for his help in so many ways, and especially to Pasang Lama for finding time for us in his very busy schedule. Thanks to you all, and to the many not mentioned, for your love and care. Because of you we had an amazing and very productive time in Tsum Valley.

Over the past 5 years, our time in Tsum Valley has shaped our direction. What began as a photography project slowly revealed something deeper. In village after village, we saw the same reality ... children eager to learn, but with limited access to consistent or quality education.

Our support began in small ways. Donating basic supplies to local schools, many of which were intermittently closed, under-resourced, or without regular teaching support. It was a beginning for us, but it was not enough.

Seeing the beautiful new Compassion School in Lamagaun open its doors is a tremendous step forward. For the first time, the valley has a school that provides structure, continuity, care and the potential for quality education, allowing Tsum’s children to show up, learn, and grow with confidence.

Just a few days ago we were happy to contribute backpacks, water bottles, sports equipment, and stationery to the students. Small things, but offered with love and good intention.

Our works continues. Through the Fagan Foundation, we are committing to long-term support of this school and ultimately to the education of the children in a sustainable, thoughtful and effective way.

More details about our support will be provided over the coming month.

We are very excited and happy to be part of Tsum’s future. We are only beginning.

Here’s a look at the remote Himalayas of Tsum Valley, near the Tibetan border, where yak herders live a rugged, nomadic life, setting up little huts as they move with their herds.

Lama Lobsang, a monk from Mu Gumpa, does it all on his own, taking care of both the monastery and the yaks. With younger folks moving to the cities, this may be the last generation of yak herders In Tsum Valley.
