My first chance to photograph the female leopardess, Fualu, on day 3 in the Maasai Mara. She was very photogenic on today's encounter:) After waking up from a nap she posed nicely in the shade as she planned her next move. Luckily, I had other opportunities to photograph her on this trip.

Throwback Thursday - L27, Ophelia, breached on a beautiful summer evening in 2012, near Sinclair Island. Sadly, she passed away in the summer of 2015 at an estimated age of around 50 years old. This was an evening I will never forget with these special animals. L-pod circumnavigated Sinclair Island and then swam south into Bellingham Channel as the sun went down.

T109A4, Garrett, spyhops to take a look around in Sequim Bay after his family started to eat a meal. Bigg’s killer whales often spyhop after they’ve made a kill, maybe to check out their surroundings before they focus on eating. This male, born in 2012, is starting to get big now that he’s in his sprouter phase.

Behind the scenes looking for brown bears, Pacific white-sided dolphins, orcas, black bears, eagles, humpback whales, Dall’s porpoise, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and more on our spring wildlife photo tours in Canada. Every day is an adventure! Can’t wait for this year’s trips.

Sometimes you just have to go for it! My buddy Steve and I rolled the dice on a perfect day with little time to spare to find orcas by sunset. Somehow, the gamble paid off and resulted in my most popular “orcas at sunset” capture after a 2 hour boat ride and search! We almost gave up until I spotted a dorsal fin pop up a few miles away. We only had 20 minutes with them but it was unforgetable Magic! The boat ride back in pitch dark was ridiculous but the water was so calm that there was just enough of a reflection of the sky on the surface to avoid any logs in our path. Carpe Diem!

Photographers on our last round of spring wildlife photo trips in Canada had a great opportunity to photograph a wide variety of different wildlife. Hundreds of daily opportunities to capture eagles competing in feeding frenzies is the big draw, but then you also have bears, orcas, humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions, and a variety of birds too. Here are a few shots from last year's trips. The countdown for this year's trip begins and I can't hardly wait! Send me a comment if you might want to join in on the fun. Every day is an adventure on this one!

A brown bear snorkels for a pink salmon in the Great Bear Rainforest! I guess that one wasn’t good enough;) Time to shake it off and look for another one!

The moment a black bear takes a look at me after catching a chrome coho salmon for breakfast!! Scroll all the way right to see the full frame version of this photo. This was one of my favorite “bear catching salmon” shots from my fall bear trips in 2025. You had to really be ready at every moment because the bears would often give little notice before they pounced on a salmon swimming too close to the shore. This bear ate what it wanted from this fish in about 10 minutes then kept searching for more.

The moment Faulu stepped out of the bushes and looked around to plan her next move. This stunning female leopard would then walk across the plains to climb a tree where she surveyed for her next meal.
