Keeping them Wild & Free
These two newborn wild foals are having some fun “horsing” around. Who wouldn’t want to see them grow up wild and free?
WHOAS does. That is our mission: “We are committed to the preservation of these magnificent animals in their natural environment.”
Sometimes a foal may be abandoned. What would happen to it without some human intervention? This is where WHOAS can step in and rescue it when necessary, gentle it and find a loving home for it. Or what if a young stallion breaks into some private land and bothers the owner’s domestic horses? WHOAS can also step in, with permission, and help the landowner remove the troublesome boy and begin working with him so he can be adopted to a forever home too.
We have found that some landowners who have property against Crown land where the wildies live, are not maintaining their fences. This causes problems too, in that a wild horse could accidentally stray onto their land and the first thing the landowner does is complain. Over the years WHOAS has, and continues to help, landowners fix their fences
A much better outcome than being sent to slaughter. WHOAS is totally against slaughter.
WHOAS is a non-for-profit, charitable society and relies on donations to be able to do our work. For the horses that we have rescued, our adoption fee is $500 which helps cover a small portion of the feed, veterinary fees, and other costs associated with the running of our facility.
So spread the word. WHOAS is working hard to keep our Alberta wildies “wild.”
