Grad season hits different as a mom.

We’ve graduated two and have three with a ways to go in our house but, I guarantee, I have my mom heart on my sleeve right with each mom of every grad I photograph. I may get a little misty with you. I get that it’s a whole family event but, mom, it hits you differently.

And so while we celebrate your graduate and we get all the special grad portraits, we will take a minute for you. To pause. To celebrate. To soak it up. To recognize that you are a part of this moment in ways they don’t understand or imagine.

So here’s to the moms behind the class of 2026.

All in a place that makes you happy.

What place would you pick for your family photos? What makes you happy? Mountains? Water? Parks? Downtown? Ice cream shop? The library? Disneyland?

When you’re planning for your family session, the biggest thing I can say leads to success is this: come prepared to have fun.

Set your expectations to the kids you have.

You can plan the best wardrobe and find the perfect location but if everyone is out of their element, the photos will show.

This family brought snacks and music the kids love. They played the games they would play with them at home. I got all the inside jokes and p**p talk. The kids started bringing up their own things they wanted to try …and they got dirty in the process.

And it was great.

We made memories and that, my friends, is where the magic lies.

You just never know what you’re going to get in Alberta.

We planned their maternity session and got a surprise snow storm (not that long ago, even) but they rolled with it like absolute champs. If that’s how they roll with the unexpected, they’re going to be excellent parents.

Maternity sessions are the perfect time, in my opinion, to celebrate the family at the stage it is, before the little one arrives, but also enjoy the anticipation of the way it’s changing for the better. Two things can be true!!

And yes, you can bring your puppy.

Also yes, you can do a wardrobe change if you want. Why not?
