From your newborn photographer turned midwife - former clients, please read!

I’ve been awake since 3 am. In the last 15 hours alone I’ve helped a mama deliver a sweet baby boy into the world; I’ve helped someone access mental health support for severe postpartum depression; I’ve done STI testing; I’ve helped three people with breastfeeding challenges; I found formula donations for someone who doesn’t have enough funds to feed her baby; and I even cut a tongue tie, ensuring an excellent latch without needing to wait 8 weeks to get into a lactation clinic (which costs $50 a visit). Unfortunately, as of Monday, I’ve also gained an extra 30% of work - with no gained income to show for it.

Midwives save lives. Midwives change lives. And the future of midwifery in Edmonton is at stake due to the shut down of a highly utilized program at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. This ultimately means less midwifery care for Edmonton’s most vulnerable pregnant populations, including our Indigenous populations, those experiencing housing crisis, and those with substance use. Friends, if you know me and what I do, then you know that these are the places where midwifery truly shines. After all - we’ve been helping save oppressed people groups since the Exodus 😉

To quote the WHO: “Strengthening midwives’ role in maternity and newborn care services would save millions of lives each year while significantly enhancing women’s overall experience of care.”

If you are an Albertan and believe in midwifery, have ever wanted midwifery, have benefited from midwifery, or if you care about preserving this option for the uterus-carrying people in your life, please speak up and write to your MLA about the value of midwives in Alberta at the link below.

Hey everyone. Here is a bit of an update regarding where I am at with COVID and then moving into the fall. It's been a crazy season that's for sure! Here's the truth: I've TRIED shooting during COVID. It's not safe. I absolutely have to make crazy animal noises, sing, poke your babies in the belly and I can't wear a mask. Babies and toddlers mirror those in front of them. If I am a face with a mask, I am terrifying and no one is smiling! (And they can't hear me make my goofy noises - I've tried!) Newborn sessions require me to wrap baby, require me to pose you and baby and require me to be in your home. Again, I've tried - it doesn't work - and each time I leave worrying about my health and yours.

I feel kind of silly and almost like I'm working backwards. But with the weather changing, and with me slowly learning that I need to be able to touch, sing and be mask-free, I've come to the conclusion that photo sessions aren't able to be done safely in this season.

This is a tough decision to make but there is so much at stake on my end right now. If we've chatted about a session in this season, please message me so that we can make a plan.

Mamas with little ones who've just arrived or are on the way... I got you. You don't have to go without adorable photos of your wee one. There are options in these crazy times!

Option A) Consider whether your family would be willing to try an outdoor newborn session. All wraps will come clean, and I will walk you through the wrapping process. No touching baby - no touching kiddos - only a camera, your family and 6 feet in-between.

There are 8 videos total - I recommend watching all of them quick, making some notes and then watching them on the day of the "shoot" in the order I suggest. Here's the first one to get you started!
