I was at the opening of the National Music Centre | Centre National de Musique 10 years ago today, and was glad to be asked to photograph today, the 10-year anniversary Canada Day celebration. NMC is a Canadian Jewel!

As an event photographer, I blend seamlessly into the background and am never seen while I am working. For example. Here is a photo I took of this mirror in a breakout room from a recent event.

The crazy part is, I am in this photo. You just can't see me because I am an invisible, silent ninja when I work events.

If you DO happen to see me at an event, it is because I choose to show myself to you. You are one of the people who mean a lot to me.

Even in this photo of this mirror, if you can see me, I have chosen to add you to my inner circle, and you are a trusted friend, client, ally, collaborator, or supporter.

On our first trip to Tanzania in 2019, we had a mix-up with our lodge booking. The mix-up was that we weren’t booked at the lodge. They had us there only one night, instead of two.

It was an interesting trip overall. I bought the tour from a local Calgary guy who basically sold it to me and then did nothing else. He had bought the trip from a Tanzanian provider and then said, “Here you go.”

Everything we bought, we got. So that was fine. The local provider did a good job overall.

Except for the booking mix-up.

The guide came to me after night one at the intended lodge and told me we had to move. I was reasonably upset, but eventually resolved to move as there was no other choice. I was sad because the lodge we were moving to was outside the National Park.

Spoiler: the lodge was amazing, and I’ve often considered that lodge for future trips.

Still in a bit of a funk as we left the park and bumped our way down the two-track trail through farmers' fields towards the new lodge, we passed a big Baobab tree that I thought might be cool to shoot at sunset. So we checked in at the lodge, then grabbed our camera gear and headed back to the tree for a few minutes.

The sky was setting up nicely, and I was feeling good about our choices and much better since the lodge mix-up news. Then out of nowhere, this local kid rides by on his bike. My head kind of exploded with this idea of him in our scene. I yelled over to Cornel and got him to call this kid over to us. I gave him a US dollar to ride back and forth in front of the Baobab tree while the sun set.

I have a tour mantra that when we handle our travel adversities with grace, we get plunked back onto our intended path. This was a perfect example of being placed (disappointedly at first) onto our intended path, to be here in this moment with this amazing local kid.

It’s one of my absolute favourite Tanzania images, and we would have never had the opportunity had the lodge/provider not mixed up the original booking.

We had an incredible bird day in Southern Alberta on March 31/26. The Snow Goose flocks were beyond incredible to see.
