The Punk Rock Duck
Meet the Red-breasted Merganser. If birds had a punk band, this drake would be the lead singer. That slicked-back crest, the blood-red eye, and an attitude that says “I own this lake”.
Getting this shot was like trying to photograph a submarine with a mohawk. Mergansers are fast, skittish, and spend half their time underwater. The trick? Get low. Like, embarrassingly low. I’m talking chin-in-the-mud, elbows-soaked, “is that a leech on my arm?” low. But when the golden light wraps around that iridescent green head and the background melts into warm butter... you forget about the cold entirely.
This is why I do what I do. Nature doesn’t perform on command. You show up, you wait, you earn the moment. And sometimes, just sometimes, a merganser gives you a four-second gift that makes the whole morning worth it.
Have you ever seen one of these in the wild? Drop a comment and tell me where. And if you’ve never heard of a merganser before today, welcome to the obsession.
