For Sarah & Brock,

The beauty of film, even on a flat-light, dreary kind of day.

An early spring afternoon in Greensboro with just family, a quiet Catholic church, and Sarah + Brock making it official before their destination wedding in Mexico this past weekend.

I was sad to miss the celebration in Mexico, but really grateful to be there for this part: the simple, honest beginning back home.

For Natasha & Joey

There are weddings that feel like they belong to the present. Then there are weddings that feel like they’ve been happening long before us. Some weddings ask you to create. This one asked you to witness.

Inside the Catholic church, nothing was rushed. The light, music, and rhythm of it all asked you to slow down and be in the moment.

Families traveled from everywhere, even as far as Hawaii, to be there. Not just to witness something new, but to stand inside something that’s been passed down.

Then we stepped outside into the spring, into celebration, into the Upchurch where it all opened up. Laughter, movement, people who hadn’t seen each other in years holding onto each other like no time had passed.

Natasha. She was stunning. Effortless. The kind of presence that quiets a room.

I kept thinking this is why we do it. Not to create something new, but to recognize something lasting and to honor what came before it.

Mariam & Wyatt

Today’s cooler temperatures have me reminiscing on their quaint vineyard celebration—full of sunlight, texture, and a slower, more intentional pace.

Mariam had this playful, spunky energy while Wyatt brought his quiet, Southern warmth. It all just felt easy and naturally unfolded into something really beautiful.

Yianna & Trey | Casting lines and sharing wine

It was so fun standing by the stream’s shore capturing images of Trey guiding Yianna through a run in the river. As someone who’s been fly fishing for a while now, it was special to watch a couple in love share in something that’s meant so much to me. I stayed quiet along the bank, peeking through winter foliage and bare limbs, simply observing. It felt like I was capturing a real meaningful part of their story.

For a few years now, I’ve encouraged couples to take me somewhere that means a lot to them for their engagement session. Perhaps I’m showing my cards a bit here, but I really think this is the secret to capturing comfortable couples (CCC). While out on the water, I learned that Trey has created a non-profit for North Carolina Brook Trout which aims to conserve and restore these native fish and their mountain stream habitats. I felt like I finally won the engagement bingo card because their interests highly aligned so naturally with mine!

For Yianna, we went to the local winery down the road. Wine has become another activity they share. It’s an easy way to pause, relax, and settle into the quiet after a day on the water.

Emily & Thomas

Presenting the #1 Wedding in Golf! Huge thanks to for the personal touch in their on-site store at . Emily and Thomas loved it.

As Pinehurst fans, it was the only choice for their wedding. I learned during the toasts that Emily played in the North & South Amateur there when she was younger. Her father was her caddy until she fired him in the heat of the tournament. When Thomas was in the army at Fort Bragg, they would visit Pinehurst for day dates. It’s small stories like that that I just eat up; they add so much meaning and layers to the day.

They got ready at her parents’ property in downtown Pinehurst; a quick drive (ha) to #2 if you’re eager for a round. Charlie, her aging golden retriever, had a huge health scare days prior to their wedding, but managed to hang on and made for a better door than a window getting ready. Their ceremony took place at the local church downtown as well. From start to finish, it was a golf-filled day and such a fitting way to celebrate the two of them.

Haleigh & Matt

Revisiting this wedding from last year and I’m still not over how beautiful this day felt. The shades of yellow in the bridesmaid’s dresses against the rich greens of the gardens were the perfect balance. It was refreshing, but still timelessly classic. At one point, a bee couldn’t resist taking a rest on a yellow bouquet.

I waited with Haleigh and Matt in a golf cart while guests took their seats for the ceremony. We took in the salt air and watched light move through the Spanish moss. It was quiet and unhurried; one of the those rare quiet moments when everyone is able to breathe a bit.

Standing there brought me back to my college days of birdwatching in the gardens, noticing the same small details and stillness that makes these gardens such a special place.

Kathryn & Adrian

Today is a special post because I’m finally sharing a family wedding I photographed in Canmore, Canada last August. Kathryn was the last of the Upchurch girls to get married. I’ve watched her and Adrian’s relationship grow over the years through holidays, moves, milestones, and the addition of their red golden, Kobe. And watching my beautiful wife stand beside her sister as a bridesmaid made it all the more special.

They gathered whoever could make the journey up to Canada. They got married amongst the tall peaks, endless sea of green, and air that made you want to take an extra sip during quiet moments. It was small and intimate; the kind of wedding where every single person there mattered.

Their wedding was a gift in itself as the full week together in nature and slowing down was well needed and inspiring. It fueled me for the end of the year season that was right around the corner.

Here’s a small collection from K+A’s celebration. The last Upchurch wedding, and one I’ll never forget!
