Visiting familiar places can often feel the same, but also not. Checking in on some of the locations from my book to see if the rock formations are surviving erosion. This one keeps holding on, but its foundation is thinning.

I recently returned from two trips to Morocco and the incredible sand dunes of the Sahara Desert. Walking around in the dark at 4am is a special feeling with only the light of nearby camps in the distance. It also takes some rather careful planning to keep the dunes footprint free - often walking in bigger circles instead of the obvious direct route. When asked how I created this image, it needed to be a composite. The first several images are to figure out camera settings and a good composition without rolling down the hill. The next several images are created to ensure the stars and the sand was in focus and well exposed. Once confident in all of that, only then, can I walk into the scene, disturbing the untouched sand, and creating many more frames with a wireless camera remote as I try standing in different locations. Later the two images are merged.

This page has become a bit quiet lately, as I’ve shifted to sharing my images in one place instead of splitting the efforts between two. I plan to share more regularly on my main Facebook profile (https://www.facebook.com/stephendesroches)and you're more than welcome to follow there too.

The forecast was promising and the high Kp plus extreme negative Bz index definitely delivered. I never made it to my intended location and it became a roadside show around 8:30pm. The distant aurora is common but seeing the corona here is rare.

Aurora chasing a very rare Kp 9. It was an absolutely unreal night as this thing danced in the skies for hours, 360 views. Directly overhead never ever happens here.
