Perhaps for most Canadians, World War II feels like a distant catastrophe that happened in some far-off corner of this vast planet. But just like the majority of people around the world, most Canadians yearn for a future of lasting peace and progress — don’t they?

I urge everyone reading this to step into a theater and watch Dead To Rights, a powerful film telling the story of what happened in China during World War II. After viewing it, you might understand why, even today, with smartphones and the internet at our fingertips, it’s still so difficult to witness the real-time horrors unfolding in places like Gaza.

The tragedies of history must never be repeated. We must remember the past and cherish the peace we have.

A little background:
1. During World War II, Japanese militarism caused over 35 million Chinese casualties— a number roughly equal to Canada’s entire population today.
2. This film portrays the infamous Nanjing Massacre, where in just two weeks, the Japanese army brutally killed over 300,000 civilians and prisoners of war—almost one-third of Ottawa’s current population.

Let’s never forget this painful history. Let’s stand together to protect peace.
