It doesn’t matter to me what my children choose to do in this world, as long as they live with conviction in the choices they’ve made for themselves.

I want them to always move forward toward a place of peace.
And on the days when they feel sad, lost, or unhappy, I want them to know how to sit with those feelings, understand them, and work through them, to know that those days are part of life.

Failures and setbacks are inevitable and important.

I want them to know that no matter where they are in the world, I will always be here to listen.
Listen to their thoughts, their worries, their hopes, and their fears.

I want them to build a life that is truly their own.
Not simply a life where they are financially secure, but one where they can dream freely, find meaning, and have the courage to work toward turning those dreams into reality.

However they get there, and wherever “there” may be, is completely fine with me.

I don’t need them to live the life I imagined for them.

I just want them to live a life that feels true to them.

I’ve counted. And with all the kids coming and going over the next week we only have one more day together as a family of five.

This summer we’ve settled into a beautiful place where the kids have connected beautifully as ‘older kids’.

Dinner times are my favorite.

Often we’ve got hands helping with dinner or extra kids around the table.

The conversations usually leading into something wildly inappropriate and totally hilarious.

It’s nice when they linger. I know we are doing the right thing when no one is jumping up from the table to leave, to hang around just a little longer and see where to conversation leads before I announce who’s on dish duty that night 😉

I love taking them all in together like this and then John says “Look at them. Would you just look at ‘em” ❤️❤️

When I had a last minute spot open up this summer and the Lee Family snatched it up quick it was hard to play it cool with one of my all time favorite families.

It’s been a little while since I’ve seen them (they’ve been busy growing! 🥹)

It took only about half a second for me to fall in love with Deb’s laugh and Logan’s cheeky sense of humor all over again.

The kids. Gorgeous. A perfect blend of their incredible parents, no surprises there ❤️

Love ya Lees’ !!
Next time not so long, hey?! 😉❤️

On Saturday my niece Destiny married Reuben.

Some of my favorite moments were my sister in law Karen and her tears of joy throughout the day.
The traditional blanketing ceremony, the beautiful florals my nieces worked tirelessly to create, the words in Reuben’s vows that said “No matter where we are in the world, if we are together I feel at home.” And the tears coming down Destiny’s cheek as she read hers.

Cousins coming together, all of them for the first time in years and a reception filled with love against the backdrop off a storming sky ⚡️❤️

Ok so maybe it’s time for a re introduction ❤️

I’m Ashley.
My husband John and I are raising three incredibly unique humans and for a whole decade I photographed them and our family every day as part of a 365 Project I called “A Daily Occurrence”.

A unique fact about our family is that we are a TWO ARTIST household.

John is a Coast Salish Master Carver.
Brilliant, talented… and handsome 😉
(pssst follow him here John Marston 👈🏼)

People often will ask me what I shoot as a professional photographer
My answer is always this :
I capture people, love and connection in all its capacity.
As a birth photographer I often start at the beginning, and then sometimes my work brings me near the end of life and love.
I am humbled and honored that families ask me to be with them where love begins and then as a chapter closes and all the beauty of the in-between.

Thanks for being here ❤️

*pictured here is a recent family portrait taken at my nieces wedding, perfectly VOUGE styled by my niece, against the backdrop of floral’s brilliantly put together by… you guessed it… my nieces (did I mention the whole Marston Family is ridiculously talented, I just married into it 😉 🤣)

At the end of a 9 hour wedding shift multiple guests came up to me and encouraged me to head outside with my camera.

Those of you who have shot a full day wedding will know that when I you put your camera away at the end of the night nothing short of a meteorological phenomenon will make you pull it back out again 🤣

But there I was, standing under the gazebo my niece was just married under with a tripod and “how to photograph lightning storms” typed into my phone…

And this is what I got ⚡️

I won’t be storm chasing in my future but im thrilled with the experience we don’t see very often on Vancouver Island 🌩️

“We all felt relaxed with you in our home and despite this being our first family session with you, somehow it felt as natural as something we do every year.
Thank you again for everything.
You captured a beautiful warmth in that evening”

That’s all I need ❤️

A little something special for the Purves Family tonight ❤️
