From the first call we knew we would love working with Faisal & Sumaiya. They are two of the most genuine and kind people you can meet.

This past weekend was finally time for their celebrations and we are so happy to have been a part of it.

We do not yet have sneak peaks ready from their Saturday ceremony (which our amazing colleague Wedding and branding Photographer and Videographer captured for us ), or their Monday reception, BUT, we can now share some images from their engagement session taken a few ago. We had soooooo much fun doing that session with them, visiting some of their favorite places in their wedding outfits (hence why we couldn't share earlier!).

Spending the day with Amelia & Nick was effortless. Everyone was so welcoming, and made our work so easy. We gave them room to breathe, and did what we do best; observe.

And that's where the magic happens. People forget we are there. Their personalities shine. They don't feel pressured. That's why we say our style is more on the documentary side. We like to tell the story of the day without interfering, as much as possible.

There are always some moments that will require a bit more guidance and posing. But over the years we have learnt when to observe and when to step in.

September seems to have flown by so fast. Which got us thinking of the beautiful couples we celebrated with last year. And we realized that Amanda & Mike just celebrated their first wedding anniversary earlier this month.

When we were planning their wedding day timeline, it was important to them to not only celebrate their love, but also the neighbourhood they love so much. So a few weeks before the wedding we did a dry run to see how much time we would need to hit all the spots on the list, then discussed details over delicious tacos. Because everything is always better over tacos and good company.

We picked them up on the wedding day and started our neighbourhood road trip. Stopped by Remik Rapids, the Hintoburg mural,had fresh donughts at SuzyQ Doughnuts, then a pint at The Third, walked through the Parkdale Market, then back home for their garden ceremony. After the ceremony we walked with them to the reception at a restaurant nerby. It was 1000% them and absolutely perfect. We loved everything about it.

I was always drawn by beautiful portraiture. And I always thought it was something I couldn't do, because I didn't have the talent or eye for it.

Then I discovered Mitzi via a Sue Bryce class a few years ago. And it all made sense. it still took me a few years to build the courage to take the dive, but 2 years ago I did and absolutely do not regret it.

I was craving the emotional connection when I was looking at portraits. I wanted to see the person, when they felt safe to remove the layers they have to put on to face the world.

I get it. I know first hand what it's like to have to put on a brave face everyday, to show the world a version of you that totally contradicts what's going on inside. It's not easy to live with invisible illnesses, but I also do not want to be judged or pitied when I go out in the wild.

These As I Am Sessions are my heart project. A way to make people feel seen, feel understood, feel safe. You are perfect as you are, without the extra fluff the world wants you to put on. You are perfect just as you are.

That's what I learned with Mitzi Starkweather - Photographer Coach, and I am so grateful to have her as both an inspiration and a mentor.

KayCee & Jack reminded us why we love what we do so much, and why we focus on the documentary and storytelling approach. We want to capture the magic of the day. The look on your parents faces when they see you in your dress for the first time. The feel of your getting ready, the impromptu cheer given by your toddler during the ceremony. The love and emotion of your guests as you say your vows. The post ceremony cheers, reception luaghts and dancefloor fun.
This, the unposed , the real moments, is where the magic lies. We still do some posing and guidince for portraits, but that is not the most part of our time with you.
Every couple this year had this in common from the first conversation we had. We don't want posed, we want to be present with our guests. They all chose intentionally to have less posed couple portraits, for more time to enjoy their day.
Looking back, we did notice a big shift with how relaxed these couples also were. And we are here for it.

Marina & Nathan put so much intention in enjoying their wedding weekend. From having a quiet evening together the night before, to getting ready together before meeting their family at City Hall for their intimate ceremony. It was peaceful, it was stress-free, and most of all they were together. Two sweathearts who have been together longer than they have been apart ❤️.
But small weddings don't mean no details. Marina had a little dish that belonged to her grandmother, the handwritten vows, their initials she took the time to embroider on Nathan's pocket square. It's the little touches that make your day special.
Marina wanted her photos to feel natural, with some added mouvement and some ideas for an editorial feel without the production. Little disclaimer, creating proper editorial images does take time and planning, and it's definitely not what we do. However, our documentary and storytelling style does allow for some play where we can create Imagery that ressembles that, in a way that is more natural. And that is just what we did here and we had so much fun. A little bit of guidance, but a lot of observing ❤️
