Some nights remind you how small you really are.

Standing in the silence of the late night in Kananaskis Country watching the sky explode in waves and curtains of green light felt unreal.

No crowds. No noise. Just cool mountain air, still water and the Northern Lights dancing above the peaks across the lake like they had all the time in the world.

This wasn't one of those "perfectly planned" shots, as mine never are anyway. It was in fact loads of luck, patience and being willing to stay out long after most people would've given up and gone home. Somehow though, in that time, the cosmos decided to give me a show all to myself.

Moments like this are why I keep chasing landscape photography. You don't get these magical moments in portraiture or commercial photography. I don't chase these landscapes for the photo though, I chase them for the feeling of standing in a place so wild and beautiful that it resets something inside of me.

The world is FULL of magic if you're willing to go and find it. ✨

Some mountains don't ask to be conquered, they ask to be listened to.

In the silence above the clouds you realize how small your biggest fears really are and how vast the world becomes when you stop living cautiously.

There are places that change you without saying a word, and for me, this is one of them.

Winter is finally on its way out of the Rocky Mountain parks near me, but it doesn't mean you'll stop seeing winter images.

I do try to post seasonally relevant photos, but sometimes you find one hiding in the archives and it just needs to be shown.

This one, of Mount Putnik in Kananaskis Country really shows the depth of the cold and arctic like conditions our mountain parks experience. You can feel the chill just looking at it.

Winters are one of the most dramatic times of year for great images, but bring on the warm summer months.

I'll be doing some travelling in and around my local parks this year, and travelling out to the Pacific Coast for a week of photography as well, and I can't wait.

The numerous peaks of Castle Mountain in Banff National Park have long been an inspiration to my photography journey as they routinely capture loads of atmosphere.

Yes, it's just a rock with some cloud around it, like some commenters have decided to tell me on previous works, but clearly, they need to look closer.

The mountains carry an unprecedented amount of power. They have the power to move and form weather patterns, reflect warmth, control the flow of water, and, harbour a seemingly infinite amount of different life in the form intelligent creatures and flora.

These "rocks" have inspired the human mind into adventure, discovery and exploration, which happened to be an old motto of an overland adventure non-profit I used to own, again, all inspired by the mountains.

So, for the simpler minds, you may just see a rock in my photo, but for the rest of you, you will see adventure. You will imagine discovery, and, you will be driven to explore.

Sometimes, (and I try to do this most of the time) you really need to give yourself a reality check of where you are.

No, I don't mean on your couch, or in bed or doom scrolling your day away, I mean in the greater Universe.

To be very simple about it, you're on a rock, floating through a vast infinite void at 2.1 million KMH that's spinning on an axis at 1600 KMH. The space around you is infinite and bigger than anything you could possibly understand.

Much of my starlight night photography is inspired by this as I try to capture both our little planet and the infinite Universe around us, together.

Sometimes, that includes a silhouette of a person, or a natural feature, minimized against a backdrop of the observable astronomy at that moment.

Scale tells the story.

It's a lot to consider, but I'm glad you're here reading it and looking at my view of it all.

As a photographer, a creator.....an artist, atmosphere matters.

Atmosphere in both your subject and in your own mind. It changes everything. It breeds inspiration and creativity.

Without it, everything is flat and takes so much more unintended effort to force out a piece of art work. That in itself is the exact opposite of what a creative should be doing.

Your work should be difficult, technically challenging and efficient but it should also be a natural process, and, a rewarding one at that.

Without atmosphere, your work suffers and so do you. Your work needs to be deliberate and intentional, not forced and frustrated. It will show, and you and your followers will suffer.

Thanks for reading.....and looking.

I hope I have inspired you to create more and just be yourself in your work.

This is one of my favourite views over the town of Banff in Banff National Park.

This isn't a hard location to get to, but to get this shot you certainly need a lens with some considerable reach.

This 16x9 would be a fantastic addition to a large wall that needs that big art piece to really set the tone and finish your space.

Get in touch, and as always, thanks for looking.

How do you travel past an iconic mountain like Mount Rundle, in these light conditions and not stop to get photos of it.....?

Yeah, I have hundreds of shots of Rundle in my portfolio, but when it looks this good, I'm not going to sail on by, and if the shot turns out as good as this, I'm certainly not going to not share it.....algorithm and bored art / photography / instagram snobs be damned.

This change of season always brings fantastic light, fantastic atmosphere and just overall great views.

I hope you're having a great start to our warmer seasons here in Banff, and, thanks for looking, liking and commenting. It is truly appreciated.

Views from the Canmore area are always changing and always interesting.

This alpine summit block at the south end of Canmore, seen just a few kilometres outside of town generally is not that interesting as it's one of the last few peaks on the eastern slopes, but sometimes it decides to put on a show.

I captured this image on my drive home about a week ago.

With the ever changing temperatures as Spring battles against Winter to take over, even the most uninteresting peaks become dramatic and full of atmosphere.

Charity Peak (Three Sisters), Canmore, AB.

While in Canmore the other day, some interesting weather and colour casting was happening across the local peaks and thought it may make a great capture and this is one of the many results of those conditions, keep in mind, I don't finish my photos in B&W and will always indicate if I ever do.

While shooting this peak of the Three Sisters, I was thinking back to my previous post, where you may recall I was bashing on the algorithm of Meta and its products.....no, my mind hasn't changed, I still believe what I said. But more so, just the reaffirmations I was having over this.

It got me to thinking though about the type of work I produce. I had a great chat with a local professional Tonalism painter sometime ago, David Sharpe (please see his work on western Canadiana, it's fantastic), and we chatted about the scalability and saleability of both artwork in general, and my work. David has been a great supporter of me and my work, but we both agreed on one thing, my work is certainly different and will take time to reach the right people.

So here's what I want to hear from you, if you enjoy my work, what would YOU tell a good friend about my work to get them to see it the same way you do?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for looking.

Is the algorithm defeating me as a photographer who relies on social media to sell my work?

Meta Facebook Instagram tell me it isn't so?!

Generally speaking, the social media reach and engagement on my work is traditionally lower than average, but lately, it has dropped right off to almost nothing. No growth, barely any reaction or engagement at all to my work.

This is a tough nut to chew....because, as a creator and an artist, the end result is that you feel that your work is failing. You're not as good as you thought. People just don't like your work, or even you as a person.......although likely not true, it's hard to feel that way, especially when you work so hard at your craft for little to no reward or recognition at all.

If you're a professional, an aspiring professional, or a creative of any level, have you seen the same on social media? A sudden drop in engagement?

The algorithm has changed to the point where photographers, painters and other 2D artists are simply being deprioritized in place of trendy reels and other types of short videos, and this feels like a betrayal to the people that made these platforms what they are today.....the architects of their success are being pushed out instead of recognized.

Let me know your thoughts....

Thanks for looking.
