What motivates you to do the things you toil at? Do those highest callings still appeal to people once they become aware of them and the factors that influenced that calling? What happens when that highest calling is no longer appealing as the principal directing force in a person's life? Is the old ultimate good replaced by something as virtuous or good? Logically, there shouldn’t be anything that surpasses an ultimate good but rarely is that the conclusion people arrive at. I imagine it’s rarely a conscious shift that results in a more selfless or virtuous pursuit.

It is well. 👨🏻‍🌾 I want to find solitude, alone time, where the fungi and trees are my only companions. After a short while, I crave community again. Quiet moments with Celine and our daughter, where I get to smell the smoke of a campfire while drinking a cold beer. Walking with my daughter in my arms as her mind absorbs the intricacies of the forest. Beautiful things have happened all summer, like being a dad while trying to balance working at a bible camp. I share this with gratitude for my current stage of life, and I hope you enjoy a glimpse of the beauty I’ve recently witnessed.

Most of the photos in this set focus on textures. The goal is to ensure that the edges are free of distractions and the plane of focus is aligned properly. While there are photographers who excel in this genre more than I do, I enjoy the intentional effort required to capture a successful detailed image.

In 2025, I have decided to take and share a photo every day. As long as I can keep up with this schedule, I plan to continue sharing images from previous months along with my daily photos on social media.

Week 3: The push to see familiar locations in a unique way is an ongoing challenge. I think this challenge is also why many photographers feel the need to travel so frequently. Travel is important, however, I improve most when I find a solid image in the familiar. Also textures and patterns are definitely a crutch I happily lean on.

I admire photographers who have a clear style. I've been told I have one, and occasionally I have a clear vision for a specific shoot. However, it largely depends on the subject. For landscapes and nature, I prefer to leave the files more natural whereas around town, I favour a vintage, grainy style.

These are the photos from last week that I like best. So far, I’m finding myself inserting diversity into my daily walks with the dogs. Eventually, I worry the photos may become repetitive, however the constantly shifting weather of southern Alberta offers some diversity in the landscape.

The Crowsnest Pass is a beautiful place to live. However, historically, it has been well used. Everywhere you look, you can see the scars from people from far and wide grasping for prosperity. Cut blocks, old mines, abandoned buildings, and discarded equipment litter the landscape.

On the eastern side of the Canadian Rockies, sunrises are consistently more rewarding to photograph than sunsets. Admittedly, it's beautiful, but photographically, I find myself less drawn to the colourful, vibrant sky spectacle and prefer a more subdued scene.
