A lot of the paid work I do today started with me volunteering my time.
Not because I wanted to work for free forever, but because I understood that in the beginning, you have to gain experience, grow your portfolio, and create real relationships.
A few things helped me turn free work into paid work:
• Reaching out and putting myself out there
• Staying consistent, even when things felt slow
• Talking to people and building relationships while out shooting
• Always having business cards ready
• Posting my work consistently so people could see what I do
• Treating every shoot like it was a paid one
• Delivering work quickly and professionally
• Making the client experience simple
• Following up and staying connected after the shoot
• Asking clients to share my name or refer me
• Saying yes to opportunities that could lead to bigger ones
A lot of paid work doesn’t come from one post or one shoot.
It comes from showing up consistently, staying visible, and building genuine connections over time.
Those early unpaid opportunities became the foundation for paid work and returning clients.
Working for free won’t hold you back.
Staying stuck there will.
