Cave-dwelling Camel Crickets... really fun to find so many in this cave!

I was thrilled to come across these neat-looking insects on a recent trip down to a favourite spot of mine on Vancouver Island. As a kid I was always into bugs and insects (and anything that moved for that matter) and would be in the garden searching for cool bugs under rocks, and this encounter brought me back to those times. Albeit these crickets are much bigger!

Did you know that crickets molt their skin? It was really cool to see a few of them in that process when I found them too.

This was an unexpected encounter, so of course I had no flash! A little bit of improv with my phone light and I was able to snap a few ok images.

Some follow-up photos to the video of Saturday's encounter with the stranded (now free) Pacific white-sided dolphins.

Pretty crazy to see this so close! Hopefully the dolphins weren't too stressed out and knew the tide would soon come in and rescue them. There were not many big splashes and signs of distress as they circled the pool, biding their time.

For the short time I was there to witness these animals, everyone was respectful of the animals and didn't get too close, which was encouraging.

Thankful for a happy ending! 😄

Roughly 15 Pacific white-sided dolphins stranded at low tide today near Qualicum.

DFO is on site and confident they will be ok until the next high tide around 7pm tonight.

Hang in there guys, you will soon be free!

A great first day of the season a few days ago, out on the water with Campbell River Whale Watching.

Highlights included a very curious pod of Pacific white-sided dolphins, a black bear scavenging along the shore, and some incredible mountainous scenery on such a beautiful day!

Any day out on the Salish Sea is a good one. 👌

Moments from this year's herring spawn.

These are so critical to BC's ecosystems, injecting energy and life into several other species. I often fear of the impacts of overfishing and how their future looks.
