The American Pika spends much of its time during the warmer months foraging for food that it stores in caches in rock cavities. These stashes are called haystacks and are used as a ready supply of food for the winter when the high alpine weather makes collecting food extremely difficult.

One of my favorite subjects to photograph is the American Pika, and my wife and I were privileged to spend some time with a few of these entertaining little rock hoppers. It is cool when you get to witness them making their territorial calls, as it is usually the first sign that they are active in the area.

Did you know that the Northern Pygmy Owl can take down prey three times it's own body mass. This tiny owl found primarily in the western parts of North America is roughly the size of a tennis ball, but weighs less, at around 60-70 grams. Unlike many owls that exhibit silent flight, the feathers of the Pygmy owl are stiffer resulting in a rapid clapping sound. They will employ a perch and pounce hunting method where they will sit motionless on a perch scanning the forest floor for signs of movement before diving down to capture the unsuspecting prey.

This owl demonstrated its expertise by catching a meadow vole to deliver to a waiting mate.
