Spring has arrived for many areas in western Canada, and it is important to be hyper vigilant when travelling in the backcountry. These guys are waking up and they are hungry and probably a little agitated, so it is best to keep your head on a swivel and remember to keep you bear spray accessible.

In keeping with the spring theme, here are some images of a male Sooty Grouse showing off for the ladies. The males will typically display from the elevated position of trees, but this guy choose to display on the ground as there was a female very near by.

The return of the Mountain Bluebird to the Canadian Rockies is a sure sign spring has arrived. It was mostly males we saw today, but soon the nesting will happen and a new flock of young ones will be born.

The ability to climb trees is crucial for young black bear cubs. It provides them with much needed protection and safety as well as giving access to some of the tasty treats the tress produce. These two little forest puppies seemed to have the climbing skill down to a science.

The Northern Hawk Owl, looks like an owl, but behaves much like a hawk. This owl has many characteristics of a hawk, including the long tail feathers, facial features and the quick wing beats as it flies. It is one of the few owls that is not strictly nocturnal nor crepuscular, often being active during the day.

Despite the recent snow storms, spring is just around the corner, and with it the return of the Mountain Bluebird to the Rockies. These little guys are so much fun to photograph during their courtship period.
