A Flash of Red, A Moment of Calm

There’s something special about those quiet moments in the yard when everything feels still—until a burst of color breaks through. The cardinal brought that fiery presence, standing out boldly against the muted tones of early spring, while the chickadee offered the calm, familiar charm that’s always close by.

Two very different personalities, sharing the same space. One loud and striking, the other subtle and steady. It’s these small contrasts that make backyard bird photography so rewarding—never quite knowing what moment will unfold next.

Where Winter Lets Go

I keep coming back to this spot, working the scene in different ways each time. This angle felt all about balance—the soft, frozen edges holding on while the river pushes through with that muddy, early spring energy. The little patch of ice in the foreground almost feels like the last trace of winter, slowly giving way to the flow.

Frozen Flow, Living Motion

I’m always drawn back to waterfalls—same place, different angles, different foregrounds, always chasing a fresh perspective. This time, it was the exposed roots and textured ground that caught my eye, leading the viewer straight into the flow. Even with hints of frost and lingering ice, the water keeps moving—constant, powerful, and never quite the same twice.

Winter’s Quiet Watcher

Tucked among the dried leaves and branches, this female Northern Cardinal blended beautifully into the soft tones of winter. Her muted reds and warm browns stood out just enough against the cold, creating a calm, intimate moment that felt easy to miss if you weren’t paying attention. A reminder that winter still holds plenty of colour and character if you slow down and look closely.

Winter Visitors in the Branches

Winter always brings a mix of colour and character to the yard, and today was no exception. The bright flash of the male Northern Cardinal, the soft calm of the Dark-eyed Junco, and the warm, quiet beauty of the female Cardinal all showed up within minutes of each other.
Moments like these remind me why I love photographing birds right here at home — each day brings something new to appreciate.
