Happy September!

Is anyone else as surprised as I am that the summer has already passed, and that the new school year is nearly upon us?

As the new school year gets underway, our team is so excited to be heading into another season of photos with so many of our wonderful returning partners...and with a few new ones we’re welcoming this year!

My family's summer was full of...adventure.

We spent a month overseas, which was every bit as wonderful, memorable, chaotic, and exhausting as you might imagine. And somewhere amidst what still feels like nonstop jet lag, I think my greatest achievement may have been surviving a 40-hour travel day across the Pacific with just a 10-year-old and a slightly perplexed Japanese street cat as my travelling companions.

My 10-year-old’s goal was to binge-watch Harry Potter for the entire international flight. Mine was to keep the unhappy cat tucked under the seat in front of me from meowing too much — and to avoid driving the poor guy sitting above him completely crazy.

Neither of us entirely succeeded. Thankfully, we all survived. 😆

That being said, it still was an amazing summer, and also a lovely reminder of how quickly these years move.

As my own kids get older, I find myself appreciating the photographs even more. Childhood changes so quickly, and the older they get, the more I realize how precious it is to capture not just what they looked like, but who they were in that particular moment — the expressions, the curiosity, the little pieces of personality that won’t stay the same for long.

That feeling is what becomes even more poignant as the years pass, and is the essence behind every photo session we capture.

Children grow and change so quickly. The shy preschooler becomes the confident kindergartener. The missing teeth arrive. The curls disappear. Their faces change, their personalities grow, and before we know it, another year has passed.

That’s why we love creating portraits that feel like more than just school pictures.

We want families to look back and remember exactly who their child was at that age.

As we head into another school year, I’m feeling especially grateful for all of the schools and families who continue to trust us with that.

We can’t wait to see so many familiar faces again this fall — and to all of our new schools joining us this year, welcome. We’re so happy you’re here.

As technology evolves, so do we. Protecting children's privacy has always been one of our highest priorities, and we're continually looking for ways to make our processes even more secure.

We've thus made an important change to our privacy policy.

From the very beginning, we've only ever publicly shared children's portraits with written parental permission—and even then, the vast majority of our images have always remained completely private.

In 2024, we took that commitment one step further. We made the decision to stop sharing all new student portraits publicly, even when parents have kindly provided written consent.

Today, every child's portraits are delivered exclusively through individually password-protected online galleries accessible only to their family and the school.

You may still see smiling faces throughout our website and on this page. Those images are from the earlier years of our business (through 2024), when families graciously gave us permission to showcase their children. While we're keeping those cherished memories online, we won't be adding any new student portraits to our public galleries.

It's a small change on our end, but one more step we can take to help protect your children's privacy in an ever-changing digital world.

And those adorable little faces you see in our cover photo? They're all former clients from 2017–2021. It's amazing how quickly they grow up. ❤️

June 21. The longest day of the year. By 4:00 a.m., there's already light on the horizon. It also marks another milestone: six years since our last post. It's the longest we've gone without a blog post...ever!I decided it was finally time to bring the blog back—but more on that in a moment.First, c...

It's been quite the spring, and suddenly just like that, the school year is winding down. Today marked the last day of our schools in metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, with only a few days of schools left in the Sea to Sky corridor and Victoria.

It's been an amazing, amazing season. Somehow we've worked with approximately 4000 kids - yes, that's 4000 adorable smiles - and our photography team has increased as a result. We are so excited by our growth and by the fantastic team members we've welcomed to our world.

Today saw us at two new sites in the Fraser Valley. Even with our growth, there are times when I question if our work is having an impact. I guess it is, for one of the teachers caught me today and said "We are so incredibly impressed...I can't help but stand here and watch in amazement. Your work is leaving me so speechless that I actually find I'm short of breath watching you."

While I don't intend for anyone to become out of breath at our photo sessions, I'm very flattered by the compliment. It truly means the world to us to hear that our work impacts those around us that much. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to create preschool photos that so many local families can love and cherish.

Our studio will remain on regular hours through the end of June. As schools close for orders and our print orders go to the printer, we'll gradually transition to summer hours before switching back to full hours in mid-September. Summer is a needed respite for our team to recharge before another fantastic and energetic season!

On a more sombre note, some of you may remember the beautiful Japanese cat we welcomed to the team as our honorary mascot last autumn. Mei was truly a gift, one of the gentlest, cuddliest and sweetest cats we've ever met. Unfortunately, we lost Mei earlier this month after an incredibly brief battle with cancer. We miss him terribly, but are so thankful for even eight months with the best cuddle bug we've ever met.
..and if your child had photos taken, edited or uploaded from September through earlier this spring, please know that this adorable feline from across the Pacific played a part in ensuring that your images were as amazing as they were.

This year is dedicated to the memory of the most amazing feline cuddle bug the KL Child Photography team has ever known.
