At the Women’s Figure Skating Short Program at , history is being made on the ice. Yet behind the cameras, the gender gap in sports photography remains difficult to ignore.
Approximately 62% of sports photographers are men, and many women in the field report not being taken as seriously as their male counterparts or receiving the same opportunities to cover defining moments.
Who stands behind the lens shapes the stories the world sees. When representation is limited behind the camera, coverage of women’s sports can lack depth and perspective. Women’s sports already receive less media attention overall, and unequal representation in coverage continues to reinforce that disparity.
When more women are behind the camera, female athletes are captured with greater authenticity and visibility. Sports needs more women behind the camera. Period.
