Mind, Body, Heart check in: •

My mind feels cloudy, like it's vibrating and overflowing with distraction - but not necessarily in a bad way. More like in a prepatory way. •

My body feels heavy, slow, slight pain in my hip so walking and sitting isn't as comfortable as they were a few days ago. I think I'm dehydrated, but also, aside from my hip, the rest of my body is very comfy. •

My heart feels deeply connected right now, possibly contributing to the overflowing distraction my brain is experiencing. I feel like anything is possible, like I can feel the whispers of every living thing dancing around me. •

How about you? •

NEW Virtual Reality film that I helped to film and photograph!

Title: To Return
Film link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmSZf3mjGqs

NOTE: if you don't have VR Equipment, and you watch it on youtube, you can see the film in 180 (like you're actually looking around the scene in 180 degrees) by dragging the hand around the video window on Youtube.

My hill sister love Laura Kottlowski posted and hosted her virtual reality film on Outside TV. Why am I stoked? Because I helped to film and photo it! We went to Canada in January and did all the things. CHECK. IT. OUT. Literally converted me to VR as an actual medium for story telling that is probably going to take over the world. Just sayin. ok. End Monday stoke. (JK. there is no end to the stoke when it's fueled by coffee).

I have been looking at the bubbles on this lake through the interwebs for two years. There are not enough unicorns or sparkles in the world to describe what it was like to skate on it (and capture Laura Kottlowski skating on it).

Storms would hit the lake only a few hours after I took this picture. Snow. Lots and lots of it. The kind that closes the roads and traps us in small mountain towns. And, that's the point. to go with the flow, travel is about the experience and the lessons we can take forth in this life. And also, it's about places like this... for me, anyway. Nokian Tyres

The forecast called for snow. But not a blizzard. And the roads were open. Which, in Canadian winter, means you carry on with life as usual. For us, that meant finding frozen rivers. At the Saskatchewan River Crossing we found blue skies, ice roads (high five to the studded Nokian Tyres for keeping us glued to the roads), sub zero temps, calm breeze and a neon, frozen flow. But how frozen? Safely frozen? In spots, yes, in other spots, not so much. We snowshoed to the shoreline and, due to a combination of high humidity and low temperatures, I realized I couldn't really feel my legs. Which, if I'm honest, I don't really mind. We've been through colder, my legs and I.

I shot this as Laura Kottlowski was first checking the ice. It was talking a lot. In a voice I hadn't heard before. Deep, crumbly and coughing. Lakes tend to speak more in the sounds of the lasers you've heard in StarWars.

Shot on Google Pixel 3 for those who are curious.

PHOTO CALENDAR!

Edit: Each purchase comes signed and numbered, with a personal note upon request and a high-res download of two images from the calendar for personal use.

Okiedoks kittens - check it. Jason and I are raising money for Rising Routes. We only have 50, so get 'em while the gettin's good. The calendars showcase photos from both of us and 100% of the money we make will go to our application for Federal non-profit status.

As many of you know, Jason and I have paid out-of-pocket until now, but we are ready to grow and need a little funding to make that dream a reality. Any additional funds will go to Rising Routes 2019 program and community development + snagging extra gear for our gear-loan library like backpacks, headlamps, jackets, etc... for those who want to join us but don't have access to necessary gear. Check it out if you're so inclined - we'd greatly appreciate it!

I spent the Fall trekking around Colorado with Eric Schuette and LifeStraw as we work on a multi-season, multi-year, high-alpine photo project. We approached LifeStraw because carrying clean water is heavy, and getting it from lakes and streams is crazy fun. But mostly, we wanted to work with them because they give back. Not only do they help provide clean drinking water to communities without, they are partnered with the Conservation Alliance to help fund the protection of our natural landscape and resources. Check them out if you're so inclined. (also - I'm making a cameo appearance on their homepage - so that's fun!) https://www.lifestraw.com/

It's appropriate, I think, that my first experience of this elusive place be with Laura Kottlowski (can you see her teeny tiny skating?) Just a quarter mile further up the valley from the first lake we ever trekked to together to skate over two years ago. To- date I've spent five alpine starts attempting to get here and have been weathered out or had to turn back every time. Until now :) the ice was the best we've ever seen in the alpine and the layers of Mordor above us sang in early morning misty veils.

Shot on my Pixel, edited in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Mobile.
