Northern Waterthrush: another lifer for me.

I was listening to the birds using my Merlin birding app when it picked up its presence. When I played it back so I could hear what it sounded like I apparently attracted it in and VERY suddenly it was zooming past my head 🤣

Lesson learned, and maybe I need a birding helmet now?!? 🪖

Cobra Chicken…. Aka….. Canada Goose

Large intimidating Geese that produce the most awful sound to ever come out of a bird…. But you know what, stunning all the same!

That said, it was quite a crash landing into our pond, in fact, one aborted the landing and just flew away instead.

Another new lifer for me today!
Ruby-crowed Kinglet has been singing away while foraging in the tops of Poplar trees.

Such a pretty and unique song, I noticed right away but I’ve had a tough time tracking it down way up there! Was finally able to catch it tonight when I was headed out to check my owl boxes.

Palm Warbler — another lifer for me.
Certainly a flashy warbler after a dull winter, but that constant tail bob gives them away every time.
Certainly cool seeing one this bright this early in the season.

A Great Horned Owl owlet — and a lifer for me. Hard to believe something this fluffy and awkward is already built like one of our top nocturnal predators.
A few neat facts about these “big babies”:

🦉 They leave the nest before they can fly, climbing around branches (“branching”) while still covered in down.
🦉 Those oversized feet? Already powerful — they’ll eventually exert crushing force comparable to adult birds of prey.
🦉 Great Horned Owl parents are extremely attentive and will continue feeding them for weeks after they start exploring.
🦉 That intense stare develops early — their vision and focus are key survival traits even at this stage.
Despite the fluff, they grow fast — reaching near adult size in just a couple of months.

Broad-winged Hawk (*Buteo platypterus*) working the pond edge.

You don’t often see them out in the open like this—most of their hunting is done quietly from perches in the woods. Around water though, they’ll take advantage of frogs and other small prey.
