Yellow-vented Bulbul or Eastern Yellow-vented Bulbul. I know what you're thinking but "bulbul" is actually Arabic in origin meaning Nightingale. This bird is locally known in Tagalog as purak, luklak or malipago. They are among the most common urban birds in the country, easily spotted in gardens, parks, and even subdivisions. Just look around and you'll see them right away.

Spotted a Blue-naped Parrot or Pikoy up close. I see them often but quite far for my lens. I got lucky the other day. This guy may have been resting due to heat exhaustion. Sadly, habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade have threatened these birds, which are featured on the Philippine 500-peso note. It is illegal to hunt, capture or possess Blue-naped parrots under Philippine Law.

Signs of heat stress on birds - open mouthed breathing or panting, where they rapidly inhale and exhale air to try to cool down. With temperatures in Metro Manila averaging in the mid-30s, I've been noticing these signs on our feathered friends more frequently, especially during the hottest part of the day.

The Coppersmith Barbet: a diminutive yet vibrantly colored avian species. Despite its small size, it can be challenging to spot. However, by attentively listening to its distinctive kuk-kuk-kuk call, I am able to track its location to a nearby tree. Nevertheless, I must act quickly, as it can take flight at a moment's notice.

It was exciting to see and photograph a pair of Golden Bellied Fly-eater building its nest. This nest was a small, delicate hanging nest, carefully constructed about 20 feet from the ground, suspended from a thin branch that sways gently in the breeze. I believe it is the female doing the hard work, meticulously gathering an assortment of twigs, leaves, and other plant material, while the male acts as a vigilant lookout, keeping a watchful eye out for potential predators. It's an Osprey or sometimes called a Fish Hawk because its diet is composed mostly of fish. But what makes this bird of prey intereting is its talons. They are the most effective hunting tools in the bird world. Notice the 4 sharply curved talons. The outer toe is reversible — it can rotate backward so the bird can grip with two toes in front and two behind. Giving it a stronger hold on fish.
