At the edge of the world, a lone figure sits suspended over the crystal-clear turquoise waters, a silent witness to the raw majesty. A winding wooden dock slices through the emerald shallows, leading the eye toward an amphitheater of dense, brooding pine forests. Above the treeline, towering mountain peaks thrust into the sky, their jagged, snow-drenched summits standing as ancient guardians over the profound stillness below. The dark, silent forest stands like a wall of shadows beneath a sky that has truly come alive. A brilliant green and deep purple light dances across the heavens, twisting and glowing like magic over the calm waters below. Right at the edge of the world, the bright moon burns like a golden fire, casting a long, shimmering path of starlight across the glass-like lake. It feels as though the earth is holding its breath, caught in a beautiful, quiet storm of colour and light where the night refuses to be dark.

Below, the water is a perfect mirror, completely still, reflecting the violent beauty of the heavens so perfectly that the line between earth and space feels utterly erased. Right at the edge of the horizon, where the dark silhouette of the pine trees meets the water, a faint orange sunrise tries to break through, trapped beneath a brilliant band of electric, glowing noctilucent clouds. I look up and see the sky glowing with bright green light. It looks like giant waves of neon fire moving slowly through the dark. Higher up, the green turns into soft purple streaks that stretch across the stars. The lake in front of me is perfectly still, reflecting all the colours like a giant mirror. Even the moon is bright and yellow, casting a long glow on the water. It is so quiet out here, but the whole sky is dancing right above the trees.

These spectacular images captured at Elk Island National Park depicts an auroral corona, a dramatic "crown" of light that occurs when you stand directly beneath a powerful surge of the aurora borealis. While the towering rays of light are actually parallel to each other, they appear to explode from a single point in the sky due to a perspective illusion, similar to how parallel railroad tracks seem to meet on the horizon. This rare view means you were essentially in the "bullseye" of the solar storm, watching charged particles from the sun collide with oxygen to create those neon greens and nitrogen to produce the deep, vibrant purples.
