From auroras to lightning strikes, the skies above us produce the most spectacular visual effects, some of which we may only ever see in photos. We're used to little fluffy clouds (cumulus) or high wispy threads (cirrus) or massive thunderheads (cumulonimbus). But shelf clouds, roll clouds and funnel clouds are rarer. Our skies can also be filled with optical phenomenon like rainbows, solar rays or the amazing aurora borealis—caused by ions from the sun trapped in Earth's ionosphere, causing them to glow in beautiful ribbons of colour. https://buff.ly/3EFbeor
