Unbowed to the Self

I don’t photograph people often, or at all, really.
My work usually lives in noticing the small worlds, textures, moments that you don't normally pay attention to in life. Animals you pass by and spaces that impact me.

On a trip to Vancouver, I had the opportunity to share space and create with and this felt different. Necessary.

This image isn’t about posing or perfection. It’s about strength.

About resilience. About the courage it takes to exist in your own body without apology. Especially when you’ve been hard on yourself, when the inner voice is louder than the truth.

I wanted to reflect her back to herself as I see her.
Grounded. Powerful. Sensual. Uncompromising. One of the most unique humans I've ever had the pleasure to know and to share a life together.

A body that has carried weight, judgment, and expectation and still refuses to bow.
This wasn’t about making something beautiful.
It was about honoring what already is.

Unbowed.

This image began with a mushroom.

I was out on a crisp, frosty morning before my therapy appointment, hands cold, breath digging up my screen, waiting for the sun to slowly come around a tree and give the mushroom cap the light I was hoping for. Everything was still. Quiet in that early morning way where it feels like the world hasn’t quite woken up yet.

While I waited, this tiny spider—no more than 3–4 mm—emerged from beneath the cap and carefully made its way into view. Easy to miss. Something I never would have noticed if I’d been rushing or focused only on what I came out to photograph.

A small fun fact: spiders this size don’t rely on strength or speed. They survive through patience, timing, and staying hidden until the moment is right. Watching it pause and move with intention felt fitting for where I was headed that morning.

I stayed still. Let the moment unfold. The frame that followed came from observing rather than directing, letting the scene exist as it was instead of trying to control it.

See the final slide for the full image. The space matters just as much as the subject.

A quiet reminder that some of the most meaningful moments show up when we stop trying to force them.

They say damselflies are the quieter kin of dragonflies.
slender, reserved, content to linger in the calm.

Unlike their cousins, they fold their wings neatly along their spine, as if tucking themselves in between breaths.

This one was newly hatched,
its colours still soft and pale,
resting in the sun to dry its wings.

I stayed there with it,
my own breath slowing to match its rhythm.
For a moment, we both disappeared into the green.

Stillness watching stillness.
Patience meeting patience.

Nature in Reverb is a meditation in motion. A visual of what it feels like when inner stillness meets outer landscape. As I sat on the rocks before dusk, the world quieted into itself. Cranes moved in silence. The trees shimmered across the water and the ripples caught the light like a waveform. A frequency I could feel throughout my body.

This piece emerged not from what I saw, but from what I sensed and felt. In deep presence, breath by breath, I began to hear nature in stereo. The water didn’t just reflect the trees, it mirrored the state of my own being. Calm. Aware. In tune.

This photograph captures a moment of natural reverb. Where external landscape and internal state blurred into one continuous signal. Not noise, but resonance. The image reminded me that we are not separate from nature. We are nature. Made of the same elements. Moving to the same rhythm.

To witness that reflection is to remember that quiet is not empty. Silence is full of listening.

This morning, I walked without hurry.
The air was thick with petrichor,
earth freshly opened by the rain.
Each step softened into presence,
and the world, unasked, began to reveal itself.

I wasn’t searching —
just noticing.
Letting the breath settle,
letting the silence speak.

Beneath a wide green leaf,
three small white bells.
Lily of the valley.
Not blooming for me,
but there all the same.
Still. Humble. Complete.

Mindfulness is not effort,
but return.
A gentle coming back
to this breath,
this leaf,
this tiny miracle unfolding in the shade.

The practice is simple.
Pause. Breathe. See.
Let the moment be enough.

In wild wonder and deep peace

"Storm of the Phoenix"

TW: Infant loss, miscarriage, stillbirth

Though it may appear unassuming, this image is one of the most profoundly emotional captures I've ever taken.

The end of 2016 brought with it the most difficult experience of my life. Joyful anticipation swiftly became overwhelming sorrow. An appointment turned into an emergency meeting with our midwife in the middle of the night, and what followed was the longest night I've ever endured.

On October 2, 2016, our second daughter, Phoenix, was born still. It was a loss whose depths I've never fully processed, one that remains ever-present within me. Phoenix—my little bird—took flight, forever watching over her siblings and family.

I talk to her daily—small conversations, mindful pauses. I feel her in the rustle of leaves when I walk, hear her whispers in the morning breeze as I sip my coffee. I strive to show her the beauty of the world through my travels and photographs.

After 2025 concluded, I spent the day photographing Beaver Mine Lake. On my journey home, severe thunderstorm warnings lit my phone as I traveled down Highway 22. The contrast of sunlight illuminating rolling hills against dark, stormy skies prompted me to pause and check in with my little bird. I spoke with her, asking for her guidance and safety, so I could return safely to her siblings.

Despite the warnings, my drive remained calm—a gentle rain and small hail, but nothing troubling. An hour from home, I was mesmerized as lightning danced in the western darkness, the sun painting its final strokes across the horizon. I had to stop and capture the moment. She was there, within the storm, assuring me of my safety, returning the gift of nature we've always shared.

This panoramic image was stitched from multiple shots, a different approach for me. I hardly adjusted it during post-processing; it felt perfect as it was.

Thank you deeply to and all the inspiring presenters at Lightchasers this year. Be mindful. Be present. Cherish every moment of this world and the time you have within it. ❤️

"Inkwell"

Inspired to post after I saw latest post. Go check it out! It's phenomenal!

This is one I shot back in 2016 but never posted up. I have it in colour as well but I prefer the stripped monochrome of this one. It reminds me of spilled ink. What do you think?

Rosellas Dream Lillie's!

A new addition to the garden and a nice surprise to find this year! I love having a bunch of perennials coming in every few weeks and having a healthy rotation of flowers!

Harvestman. One of my favorite subjects to watch while I sit in my garden looking at the flowers and bugs. They move around trying to keep in the underbrush and debris and away from prying eyes.

Thanks to the 105mm macro, I can find them so much easier. I'm continuing on my macro learning journey. Once he stayed still, I snapped this one. I love the way his legs are perched up and the detail in his body. I love seeing the details that aren't usually available or seen.

Unlike spiders, they do not eat via a strawlike sucking of liquids; instead, they ingest small chunks of solid material. They often feed at night. Their vision is generally poor, and the second pair of legs, which are usually the longest, function as “feelers” as they walk around, like a blind person tapping a cane.

Although, not quite at their level yet, thanks for the inspiration .macro and a bunch more! I think next on the list is a flash and diffuser. Maybe a small panel led light and to get out of my own backyard! Find some fungus or other subjects to explore!

Another backyard macro test! This little guy was probably half the size of my pinky nail and stayed relatively still. I used my tripod for these and experimented which a little focus stacking.

Setting my focus and shooting in burst, I rotated my focus ring and tried to capture different focal planes so that I could later combine them in Helicon. These are only about 6 images into 1 but it was a fun experience!

Did you know that flies taste with their feet! Which are 10 times more sensitive to sugar than the human tongue!

What subjects or textures would you like to see or explore?

Macro. It's a genre and type of photography that's always intrigued me and one that I've wanted to experiment in and learn. I finally picked up the 105mm f/2.8 macro and I'm experimenting in the backyard.

I love seeing the details of tiny things. Things you can't see or notice. Things most people would walk by without realizing how incredible they are to look at. Patterns, details and small things most would overlook. I wish there was a way to share these to show the true sharpness and detail!

I'll be trying to learn this lens and macro, so you'll see some new subjects here and there! Any macro advice appreciated?

Which dragonfly is your favorite?
