The translation of Taranaki is as follows “mountain peak” (Tara) and “glistening” (Naki), which stem from the Maori word Ngaki. The latter references the snow often covering the mountains. Classed as a relatively young mountain having commenced volcanic activity approx. 130,000 years ago, Taranaki or “Te Maunga” is one of the most symmetrical mountains in the world, towering at 2518m tall. It shadows the secondary cone of Fanthams peak which sits at 1966m.
