One of two ‘engine pods’ drying after two coats of finishing epoxy to seal out the inevitable glow fuel/oil soaking they incur... if they even last that long 😆

After quite a delay while working on my CNC and acquiring shop tools I attempted to make the Spectra fuel tanks from various materials including aluminium, galvanized steel, ‘tin’ and finally brass. This expensive material was the only one I could get consistent results with.

Spectra - In 1976 I was ten years old and a member of the Torbay Model Aero Club founded and run by three university students which had a membership of around twenty.

Control line flying featured heavily with speed, aerobatics and combat being taught to us bright-eyed and enthusiastic kids.

Spectra was a club 'one-design' control line combat ship designed to standardize aircraft, utilize a relatively cheap OS 20 FP engine and be built from 4 sheets of balsa. They are fast, FAI F2D ready, strong, capable, easy to scratch build and oodles of fun!

My old flying buddies will remember hand-built fuel tanks from baked bean cans, covered in nylon shower curtains and doped tight... they are almost indestructible!

I might still have my original plans stored somewhere back in New Zealand but have over the last couple of weeks (& before my memory fails me) redrawn it from memory to build a couple for the 2020 flying season here in Canada.

I'm providing the plans to anyone who wants them, they are a single Arch-E sheet & can be printed almost anywhere in the hopes that my two won't be the only ones next year although I'll certainly loan out #2 to whomever wants some combat time 😁🤔🤘🛩

I love running projects to the ends of their timlines... [sarcasm], with one day remaining until the Stetson Giant Scale event, I'm down to the wire.

Working lunchtimes, immediately after work until the wee hours of the next day and all weekends, I'm so close! :D

Despite disasters with paint masks, dead batteries and parts lost not once but twice in the States, those delays & shenanygans will not stop me! :D

I even took a day off to finish, fly and sign-off...

You will not believe what happened next!! :O
