It's go-time! The Elk Valley Ultra is TOMORROW! I ran it in 2019 - it was my first time doing a 50k - and so cool that it was on my home-town trails.

This year I'm extra stoked and a little bit nervous in a different way - I'm the on-trail photographer covering the most epic and beautiful part of the course from the backside of Mt Fernie to Windy Pass.

These photos are from a recce we did last year to get photos for promotional purposes. It's truely stunning out there 🤩

NZ is so, so much more than the tourist destinations.

We didn’t see another soul on this overnighter, which somehow made both the epic sunset and the equally epic sunrise feel even more magical ✨

But here’s the fuller story. This adventure was my idea šŸ˜‚ The kids have learned that my ideas often involve more walking, more elevation, and more effort than they would voluntarily choose. And for a while it looked like we might have to pitch the tent in a soggy mossy puddle, which was super unappealing.

So I was running around the granite boulders like a crazy lady before we lost the light, and I somehow found what I think was literally the only dry flat spot for the tent. We got it pitched in record time while the sunset atmosphere was absolutely electric 🌟 and then I got to sprint around taking photos feeling like I’d won the lottery 🤩

It was freezing in the tent, but we got to eat chocolate, which felt wildly luxurious since we now live in bear country in Canada and can’t have food anywhere near the tent šŸ˜…

The next morning we woke for sunrise and it was every bit as stunning, and somehow we were back at the car by 11am.

In my humble opinion, it’s almost always worth doing ā€œthe thingā€ — even when it takes more effort than you’d prefer šŸ’›

Kent and I first paddled the Clarence in 2000.
Open canoes…which, in hindsight - holy moley šŸ˜… there’s some legit whitewater in there!

That was back in the ā€œbefore kidsā€ era. We even convinced our Canadian friends to come because, obviously, no Kiwis knew how to canoe šŸ˜‰

Fast forward 25 years…and I got to do it again. This time with two of my kids, good friends, and a whole crew of people we’d never met before.

This whole NZ trip felt nostalgic, but this one hit differently.
Same river, but in a completely different life.

My kids are older now, which means it’s a little harder to make them do the things. šŸ˜‰

But travel helps. There are fewer ā€œI’m busyā€ excuses and more just…going. They probably wouldn’t have chosen to hike — but when you put down the phone and go do the thing, it feels so good. The kind of good that lingers.

They’ve been peeking over my shoulder while I’ve been culling and editing these photos, and even though this year looks very different from this travel season last year, they keep saying how glad they are that we went. That we did it. That we made the memories.

And that’s the point, isn’t it? šŸ’›

Do memorable things.

Spoiler alert: they rarely come from staying in your comfort zone.

One of the coolest things I did in NZ? Two middle-aged moms (my sister and me šŸ™‹ā€ā™€ļø) renting kayaks in Whangamatā and paddling out to Donut Island.

You paddle straight through a cleft in the rock — a tunnel carved by the sea — with the tide and waves sloshing you around… and suddenly you pop out into the centre of the island. A hidden lagoon. Steep rock walls. The most surreal blue water. The eeriest, most magical light. It felt like we’d slipped into another world. 🤩

After that we paddled to a couple more islands and scrambled to the top of one, salty and laughing and feeling alive.

Here’s the thing: adventure doesn’t have an age limit. It doesn’t require perfection or peak fitness or a five-year plan. Sometimes it’s just saying yes, renting the kayaks, and paddling toward the tunnel.

Go do the memorable thing. šŸ’™

Which means… watch out for some regular posting over the next wee while!!

In the meantime, go explore the world, my friends šŸŒŽšŸ¤ It’s a big, beautiful place 🤩
