Last week, Muscowpetung leadership and members toured an aquaponics facility currently being built by Wakayos Developments LTD on Little Black Bear First Nation. The project represents a major step toward food sovereignty, combining fish and plant production in a sustainable system that will provide fresh produce and even medicines like sweetgrass. Once complete, it will be the first facility of its kind in Saskatchewan.

Wakayos Developments LTD CEO Shane Bellegarde has been working on the project for 5 years and gave Muscowpetung members a tour and explained all the benefits of such a facility.

Muscowpetung’s economic development company, MSBD, has partnered with Wakayos Developments LTD and will work closely with them to develop a similar aquaponics facility for Muscowpetung.

Muscowpetung and LBB also signed an MOU in 2024 which will help projects like these take off. This initiative will create jobs, build careers, and support long-term food security for future generations, marking an important step forward for both Nations and the future of sustainable food systems. Plans to begin geotech and land surveying will take place in the coming weeks with a sod turning ceremony planned for Summer 2026.

We would like to acknowledge Muscowpetung's Elder Dan Pelletier and Matrina Anaquod and Simone Cappo for coming out to tour the facility.

Exciting times are ahead for the nation!

UPDATE: Friendly reminder that Boxing is back in Moose Jaw, SK, for the month of June 2026.

Transportation will be available for any youth who wish to attend and will leave the school at 4pm.
