THE ART OF SEEING

Lesson Two

Not Every Beautiful Photograph Needs a Beautiful Location

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear from photographers is that beautiful photographs require extraordinary locations.

A mountain.
A waterfall.
A field that stretches for miles.

And while I’ll never turn down a breathtaking view, I've learned something very different over the years.

Beautiful photographs rarely begin with a beautiful location.

They begin with learning to see beautiful light.

This little patch of forest wasn't a destination. Most people would have walked right through it without giving it a second thought.

But the moment I noticed the light filtering through the trees, I stopped.

I wasn't looking at the forest anymore.

I was looking at the way the light wrapped around her face, how it separated her from the background, and how it brought warmth and depth to an otherwise ordinary place.

That became the photograph.

One thing I often see photographers do is spend more time searching for the perfect location than searching for the perfect light.

I've done it myself.

But over the years, I've realized something...

A beautiful location can't rescue poor light.

Beautiful light, however, can completely transform an ordinary location.

As photographers, I think one of the greatest gifts we can develop isn't finding better places to shoot.

It's training our eyes to notice the light that's already there.

The more I photograph, the more I realize my camera isn't the most important tool I carry.

My eyes are.

Once you begin to truly see light, you'll start creating photographs in places you never thought possible.

And to me...

That's where the art begins.🀍

I'd love to know...

When you first looked at this photograph, what caught your attention first?

Was it the little girl...
The light...
Or the feeling the image gave you?

I'm genuinely curious.

Until next week...

Keep noticing the beauty most people walk right past.

Maybe it's your best friend. Your sister. Your mom. Your favourite coworker. Your coffee date. Or someone you haven't had photographs with in far too long.

The person you tag must live outside your household because I want this little giveaway to treat two different households. 🀎

If your comment is drawn, the person you tagged wins right along with you.

Entries close Thursday, September 17 at 6:00 PM, and I'll draw our winning pair that evening.

And because now I need to know...

WHY THIS PHOTOGRAPH WORKS

When I walked into this church, I didn't grab my camera right away.

I actually stood there for a minute.

I wanted to take it all in.

The stained-glass window.

The reflections on the old wooden floor.

The quiet feeling that only a century-old church seems to have.

Before the bride ever walked down the aisle, I already knew where I wanted to stand.

Not because I had photographed there before...

But because the room was already telling me where the photograph was.

Some photographs are worth saving for just the right moment.

This engagement session wasn’t photographed recently. In fact, I never shared these images at all.

But looking through them again reminded me exactly why I love photography.

When I look at a photograph years later, I don’t only want to remember what something looked like.

I want to be transported back.

I want to remember the warm breeze that moved through the evening air.
I want to see that sun setting over the water again.
I want to remember the way the light changed as it disappeared behind the mountains.
And most of all, I want to feel something.

The closeness.
The laughter.
The way two people held onto one another in that particular season of their lives.

That is what photographs have always meant to me.

They’re a little like writing your own novel, except instead of words, we write it in light, movement, expression and connection.

And years from now, we get to open those pages again.

These aren’t simply beautiful photographs from a sunset engagement session.

They are a chapter.

A piece of their story that will forever live on the pages between them.

And maybe that is one of the most beautiful things photography gives us...

the ability to return to a moment we can never actually go back to.

THE ART OF SEEING

Lesson One

Before I even lifted my camera...

I stood still.

That's probably not the answer most people expect from a photographer.

Most people imagine we walk into a room, lift our camera, and start looking for the perfect photograph.

But that's never been how I work.

When I walked into this church, I wasn't looking for the bride first.

I was looking for what made this place meaningful.

I knew this church had been standing for more than one hundred years, and as I looked around, I couldn't help but wonder about the stories these walls had witnessed.

How many couples had promised forever here?

How many fathers had walked their daughters down that same aisle?

How many generations had gathered inside this beautiful place?

Those thoughts mattered to me.

Because I wasn't just photographing a wedding.

I was photographing a story that had become part of something much bigger.

Before the bride ever took her first step down the aisle, I had already found where I wanted to stand.

Not because I'd photographed there before.

Not because I had a pose in mind.

But because the room quietly showed me where the photograph was waiting.

The stained-glass window caught my attention first.

Then the reflection on the old wooden floor.

Then the way the aisle naturally led my eyes toward the altar.

In that moment, I wasn't thinking about camera settings.

I wasn't thinking about my lens.

I was thinking about how I could honour this moment in a way that would still feel meaningful twenty years from now.

One of the greatest lessons photography has ever taught me is this...

Beautiful photographs don't begin when we press the shutter.

They begin when we slow down long enough to notice what everyone else walks past.

Sometimes the most important part of my job isn't creating a photograph.

It's taking a moment to truly see.

And maybe that's true for life, too.

The more we slow down...

The more beauty we notice.

The more gratitude we feel.

The more stories we discover.

Photography has given me many gifts over the years, but I think learning to truly notice the world around me has been the greatest one of all.🀍

I'd love to ask you something...

When you first looked at this photograph, what was the very first thing you noticed?

There are no right or wrong answers.

I'm simply curious what you saw.

Until next week...

Keep noticing the beauty most people walk right past.

Have you ever looked at a photograph and wondered...

"Why does this one make me feel something?"

Over the years, I've realized it isn't always the location.

It isn't the camera.

It isn't even the pose.

It's something much deeper.

It's the little details...
The quiet moments...
The light...
The connection...
The things most people never notice.

Over the next while, I'm going to be sharing something that's been on my heart for a long time.

Not just beautiful photographs...

But the stories, the thought process, and the artistry behind creating them.

I can't wait to share this journey with you.
