I’ve always loved the idea of learning and growing as an artist. About 5 years ago, I started to shoot more film. Much like when I bought my first DSLR camera, I became obsessed and have been hooked on film photography ever since.
Just like listening to music on vinyl, there is something special that modern technology just can't replicate. There is something in the slight imperfections that come with film that add character and feel so real in a world striving for perfection.
I began to photograph my everyday on film, my dogs, my wife, my surroundings. This was something I hadn’t done since I first fell in love with photography and it felt really good. But what I loved even more were the images. Simple, everyday moments that I was able to hold in my hands, that I am grateful to have captured so that I can experience them again down the road. This is the kind of work I want to create. Not images that are meant to be scrolled past, but rather images that are meant to be held in your hands 10, 20, 30 years down the road when ordinary moments will feel even more extraordinary. Images meant to be printed or inshrined into an album meant to be enjoyed for years.
Meet Wynter Stills. A film inspired portrait and wedding photography studio with a focus on honest, real imagery that is meant to be experienced for years to come.
But why create another brand?
When I started shooting film, I noticed mixing film and my MHP digital editing style didn't mix the way I would like. Film can offer grain, muted tones, and lots of quirks, which differed from the clean modern look I would normally use. I wanted to be able to share my love of film photography with people, but didn't know how to integrate it into my Mag Hood Photography business.
Rather than completely change my Mag Hood Photography style, which I still love and want to continue shooting, I came up with the idea to start Wynter Stills, where I could freely shoot both film and digital images with an aim to create more artistically driven moment based images inspired by the character and colours of film.
I'm not saying one is better than the other, they're just different! If you like clean & crisp, consider Mag Hood Photography. If you wanna get a little weird and artistic, go with Wynter Stills.
I’ll be sharing more about Wynter Stills, including some images, more info and even a giveaway, but for now, here is a link to my new website! I’m grateful to have been able to photograph so many amazing individuals, couples and families over the years and hope that this new brand will resonate with you as well.
