Morning on Gamitagama Lake

I saw this long narrow east-west oriented lake on the map. So... up at 4:30; coffee; drive down dirt road in the dark; hike a mile; stand in soggy muddy water waiting for the sun. What could be better? From Lake Superior Provincial Park, Ontario. www.charliewhitfield.photography

Trapper's Lake

A misty morning lake with lily pads, gnarly dead trees, and reflection of fog-shrouded sun. What's not to like? (From Lake Superior Provincial Park, Ontario.)

Blackstar

It's January and where the heck am I? In South Dakota, on a dirt road going into Badlands National Park. The photo title is, of course, from David Bowie's final album, released one day before this shot. I learned of his death a few days later. The sun is darkened by the clouds but still lights this strange landscape. I don't know if the road is leading me where I want to go, but I'll follow it anyway. Impervious to Winter

The tree stands perfect and impervious to winter. All else is enveloped in frost or fog. This landscape is (by its own nature) almost devoid of color, but it is there if you look for it. For prints or licensing: www.charliewhitfield.photography.

Top of Mt. Whitney, Looking North

It's August in the Sierra—in other words, there is a forest fire somewhere. The smoke obscures but gives depth to the view from the top of Mt. Whitney. I'm standing within 100 yards of the end of the 211-mile John Muir Trail here. For prints or licensing: www.charliewhitfield.photography.

Gandalf and Galadriel with Lemonade

This is from Muir Trail Ranch, almost exactly halfway on the 220-mile John Muir Trail. It's a good place to stop, have a big meal, and rest your feet for a day or two or three. For prints or licensing: www.charliewhitfield.photography.

Hiking on Mars

This is how I imagine Mars before most of the water evaporated into space. With a trail and hiker, strangely enough. From mile 196 on the John Muir Trail, Bighorn Plateau. For prints or licensing: www.charliewhitfield.photography.

Milky Way over Fin Dome

In my 24 days on the trail, I slept under the stars all but 4 nights. "Cowboy camping" in backpacker jargon. Usually above 10000 feet with an extraordinary view of the sky. To be honest, I was in an exhausted sleep by 9 pm most nights. Still, I feel closer to the stars after that experience. From mile 170 on the John Muir Trail, Dollar Lake.
