I got the chance to spend some time in Italy at the end of 2025. It is hard to describe Italy, but timeless, grand and ethereal are some words that come to mind.

It’s already December, and we’re at the cusp of the winter solstice. The days are short and snow is settling in, but brighter days are just around the corner.

Fall is an exciting time for me as it marks the start of surf season on the Great Lakes. Toward the end of November, I traveled to Portugal for a big-wave photography workshop with Maria Fernanda—an experience I’d been looking forward to for years. I’m excited to share some of the images from that trip.

I hope this issue of Behind the Lens captures what made this fall and the end of the year so memorable.

Thank you, Portugal! 🇵🇹🌊🌅

These past couple of weeks have been nothing short of amazing. From wandering the streets of Lisbon to learning from Maria Fernanda ( ) and Sunny Breger ( ), making new photographer and surf friends, and visiting Nazaré and Peniche for the first time—this trip truly had it all. Every visit leaves me wanting to come back and keep exploring this beautiful country and its islands.

I’ll be sharing more about this journey in the next edition of Behind the Lens, arriving right before Christmas. Be sure to sign up for my newsletter to read the full story and see some unique images from this trip.

For the past few years, summer has usually meant heading north for my work with Water First, but this year I stayed closer to home and let things move at a slower pace. When the heatwave in Canada became overwhelming, I escaped to Scotland for the first time—a place I’d long wanted to see—and it also gave me another chance to return to Europe after an amazing trip to Austria earlier this year. Back home, I was thankful for the chance to exhibit at OBJX Studio during the Black Environmental Initiative’s Return to Our Roots event in Toronto. As August came to a close, the air cooled, the rain finally returned, and the first low-pressure system rolled in. I dusted off my water housing and headed into the waves, shaking off the summer heat and welcoming fall in the best way I know how.

This issue of Behind the Lens brings together the places, music, books, artists, moments and photographs that defined my summer.

Another summer solstice has passed, and the days are as long as they get in the Northern Hemisphere. Long walks on the beach, dips in the lake, and reading in hammocks have become part of the daily routine.

This spring has been full, though different from what I had initially anticipated. I’ve been more selective with my camera use and have stepped back from social media to better appreciate what’s unfolding around me.

In this edition of Behind the Lens, I’ll share a bit about officially wrapping up the project I’ve been leading with Water First and the Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation in Labrador after four years—how it has helped me grow and led to some of my favourite images. I’ve also collaborated with my friend Jenny Matthew, Giizhikkwe (Cedar Woman), on a new photo series titled bi-yaa for the fourth round of Call to Action #83, which will be revealed in September. With fewer waves than expected this spring, I’ll also share some of the images I’ve captured, and the books and music that have inspired me.

It’s officially spring! The longer days, the earthy smell of the trees and grass, the songs of birds roaming in the sky, the Great Lakes opening up, and the warmth of the sun are some of the things I have been really grateful for over the past few weeks.

While I am really looking forward to this spring, I am also happy to have had the winter. In this edition of Behind the Lens, I’ll be sharing a bit about some of this winters’ highlights, as well as airplane mode (a curated editing playlist I’ve been putting together since last year). I will also be sharing a bit about a project that I’m currently working on (CTA #83).
