FRIDAY FAVE from 2024: Lilac-breasted Roller (Coracias caudatus)
It’s lilac season here in Ontario, but it’s not a flower I’ve photographed, so this beautiful Lilac-breasted Roller is a stand-in.

FRIDAY FAVE from 2024: Grey Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis), Ontario
Lying in bed before sunrise and hearing the dawn chorus is such a joy. The robins are up first, followed by the incessant house wren and cardinals. Then, between their boisterous songs came the faint, plaintive mewing of the first catbird of spring, returning to the naturalized area behind our house. What a treat!

FRIDAY FAVE from May 2008: Morel (Morecella spp.) Bruce Trail
It’s always a thrill to see wild mushrooms, particularly a less common variety like a Morel. It turns out we have some growing in our naturalized backyard habitat this spring. Rather than foraging, we enjoy seeing them in their natural home and knowing they are there to propagate for others to see in the future.

FRIDAY FAVE from 2014: Spring Light IV, Cheltenham Badlands
The first bright green leaves of spring are backlit by the dawn light drifting across the eroded clay of the Cheltenham Badlands. This dramatic area is found east of Erin, along the Bruce Trail which follows the Niagara Escarpment.

New Article: Telephoto upgrade to the 150-600 — great expectations!
Upgrading to a new lens is not a decision I take lightly. It must have the performance improvements to off-set the financial cost as well as the additional size and weight. The 150-600mm does and it is noticeable from the moment I began using it—and the photos back it up. Have a look . . .

FRIDAY FAVE from this week: “I’m waiting!”, Rue des Martyrs, 9th, Paris
A street scene so typical of life in Paris. Rental bikes are everywhere and used by everyone. This is the type of travel photography that excites me; vignettes that capture “the essence of place”.

FRIDAY FAVE from this week: White Stork flying (Ciconia ciconia), Ferragudo, Portugal
What a pleasure it was to spend an hour or so observing and photographing these large, gangly flying dinosaurs. There are dozens of pairs in Ferragudo, each nesting atop their stack of woven branches and each greeting its partner with beak clapping and head tossing. It really was a memorable experience.

New article and photos—Iberian magpies, stilts and storks.
What was meant as a chill holiday lived up to expectations, but some nature therapy helped along the way.
Olympus Passion OM System

Even during a chill holiday, we need some nature therapy. this came in the form of birding around Ferragudo for the storks and to the Alvor Marshes for even more excitement.
