Tomorrow, September 30th, marks the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to reflecting on recent discoveries at Canada's former residential schools.

It's also known as Orange Shirt Day, inviting Canadians to acknowledge the tragic history of loss while paying tribute to Indigenous residential school survivors, their families, and communities.

In the spirit of this day, here are 5 local events across Metro Vancouver that commemorate Truth and Reconciliation Day. 🧡

I hope we have learned from this horrific time and not treat any human or animal in such a barbaric way. Maybe there will always be some humans that can act so dreadfully I know there is more good than evil in the world and maybe we need to spread our love openly. Thank goodness that we stopped this by winning WW2. At least at that time. We need a weapon free world one where we are all happy where we are and do not need to take from others. No borders.

10 August 1942 | One of the SS doctors carried out a selection in the camp infirmary in Block 20. He chose 75 sick prisoner. Later that day they were killed with phenol heart injections.

Excerpts from the memoirs of Stanisław Głowa, former prisoner number 20017, employed as a scribe at the „hospital” at Auschwitz I:

"During the first phase, to make the procedure look innocuous, intravenous injections to the arm were used. Death or impairment did not take place as rapidly as with the injections to the cardiac cavity, to the heart, as used later. And so, in the later period, only injection directly to the heart was used. The injection was made using a large syringe with a needle 10 cm. long, inserting it next to the left ni**le, between the ribs, and because it was done so many times, the people doing it became very good at it. They injected 30% phenol (carbolic acid). This was a very strong solution, so that, on the corpses of the “jabbed” people, there was a dark splotch around the site of the injection, a burn mark."
