A favorite plant that reminds me of home, the Skunk Cabbage, a.k.a Swamp Lantern.
The coastal first nations tell a story of a time when salmon could not find their way back to the forest. The people ate many roots and plants, including Skunk Cabbage. Upon the spring salmon returning, Skunk Cabbage spoke to them and told them how to get back to the forest. The salmon found their way and the people were able to eat them once again. For this act Skunk Cabbage was rewarded with an elk skin blanket and war club, and placed in the richest softest soil.
