"Last Leap"
It’s hard to imagine when the last photo of our beloved four-legged friends will be taken—but it’s even harder when you already know it will be the last. This was Jake, an adorable Scottish Terrier, and this was his last photo.
For the second time, I had the honor of doing a farewell session for a dog, so his human could keep a small fragment of time to remember their beautiful story together. For most of his life, Jake lived in a Scottish Terrier breeding facility until he was adopted by her. We don’t know the conditions he lived in, but seeing his pure joy as he ran freely through the park says more than enough. He loved everything he did with his human, staying by her side at all times. For him, everything felt like a new experience—and for her as well, as he was her first canine companion. They enjoyed each day together for almost a year, until they received the heartbreaking news that he had cancer and wouldn’t have much time left. And that’s how I came to meet them...
Today, he is on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, and although his story may have been difficult, in the end he truly got to live—even if only for a short time—and experience the warmth of a home he had surely dreamed of his whole life, reminding us that sometimes happy endings do exist.
Some time later, when I delivered the photos to his human, it was heartwarming to see that two little Scottish Terrier puppies were now riding with her in the car. For a moment, I imagined that Jake had sent them to her, so that this time she could have more time to feel the unconditional love of a dog and fully live a beautiful human–dog story.
And through these images, I like to think his story didn’t end… it simply changed form.
Until we meet again, Jake.
