“A single, gold-sprayed chicken feather hangs in the balance, catching the sharp Hamilton sun as it streams through the windows of Smokestack Gallery. It is a fragile thing, plucked from a neighbor’s coop and transformed into a royal scepter of the mundane. Beside it, a row of dolls stands guard. They wear 1990s-style hip-hop gold chains, their plastic limbs dark and regal, but their faces are painted a startling, bone-white.

This is Precious Metals, a collaborative exhibition by Roger Mooking and Laine Groeneweg. To walk through these doors is to step into a curated silence where play replaces work, and every shiny object is waiting to fire its emotional payload into your chest.”

New Published Project - Available Now!
A new published project by David O’Connor David O'Connor is now available for collection! You Can Do Anything represents a O’Connor’s first foray into woodcut printmaking. Speaking to his intentions for the project and experience through its collaborative making, O’Connor shares:
“Harkening back to early circus imagery and crafted using period-correct printing processes, I wanted this piece to embody the feeling of an outsider folk-art aesthetic while still displaying a high level of draftsmanship and finish…Woodblock printing was frequently used in early circus posters. Laine’s extensive knowledge of historical printing methods helped identify the visual markers of process-based imperfections and showed how they could be recreated intentionally, allowing us to capture the spirit of these historical visual styles while maintaining a high level of technical precision.”

Our current 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙈𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙨 exhibition, presents a series of collaborative print-works by Roger Mooking and Laine Groeneweg. Silkscreen, and silver / gold-leaf processes thread through the works on view to display a range of conceptual approaches and interpretations around the “precious metals” theme.

Hamilton artist 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐎’𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐫 (David O'Connor) has been working with Laine Groeneweg in the analog studio to expand the visual language of his tattooing practice into printmaking. The piece brings together O’Connor’s interest in the history of Western traditional tattooing and fascination with woodblock printmaking. Leaning into the unique textures, [welcome] inconsistencies, and tactile qualities inherent to the woodblock printing process, the piece captures the folk-art aesthetic of early circus poster imagery (with an exacting level of technical precision).
