Director's Statement:
I had a little over three weeks to create Connections with my crew. Please know that this film is an experimental narrative. It may feel jarring for some. It may not be for everyone, and that’s fine: it’s supposed to evoke different emotions and interpretations for different people. It is intended for the viewer to piece together information and key themes. If this experience makes you feel a bit uneasy, or if you are just plain shocked at what you see, then good. I did my job. I hope you can visualize what I intended to create.
The girlfriend character (to me) represents a symbol of the dark, twisted thoughts of depression we all feel, and the depths it can lead us to. We all have that nagging voice inside our heads that sometimes fights us. Depression tends to rank individual relationships on a level of importance. We don’t need to spend our time finding the ‘ideal’ friend or partner to be with when there are plenty of other people in our community worth building relationships with. It’s the simple things, like helping others and being of service that makes a difference. Making connections for me has been the best medicine in fighting depression. We should never feel like we are completely alone because we never are. We, as individuals and a loving community, deserve better.
I have never been front and center on screen like this before, and it is a bit frightening. But I am also no longer afraid to be seen. There’s a strong sense of bravery in putting yourself out there. Being vulnerable is ok. That’s what I’m doing, by sharing this story; using a narrative to be vulnerable and connect with every single one of you. I hope you can relate to some of the concepts that are presented here. I hope you enjoy Connections.
