I was going through an old box a while back and found a photo of my mom I had never seen before. She looked so young. Younger than I am now.

I stared at it for a long time. I did not recognize her right away because I had never seen her look like that, before she was anyone’s mom, before any of it. Just a young woman with her whole life still ahead of her.

I do not know who took that photo. I do not know where it was taken.

What I do know is how it made me feel. How it made me view my mom in such a different way.

I think about that box of photos a lot, and I think about how many people have a box just like it, sitting somewhere, waiting for someone to actually look through it.

Someone sent me a pen once as a thank-you gift.

I was grateful, it was nice, and I set it on my desk.

A week later it was in a drawer. A month later, I could not have told you who sent it or why.

That is what a forgettable gift does.

It does not build a relationship. It does not remind anyone why they should keep referring people to you. It just disappears.

I think about that pen every time I talk to a business owner about their client gifting, because most of them are sending the same thing.

A woman told me this story a few months ago, and I still think about it.

She had twelve minutes to leave her house during the evacuation. Twelve minutes to decide what mattered.
