I’m excited to keep some behind the scenes of portraits rolling!

I took this photo of a week after the last portrait I shared, in the summer of 2017. I was kind of nervous as s**t to ask for a portrait, because I was still really unsure what I was doing or why I was drawn to figuring it out.
I remember being in a fit of euphoria that Friday afternoon, because a week of summer bike camp at had just wrapped up in the finest fashion I’d ever ever experienced - that meant the world to me at that time.
I think Matt mirrored that enthusiasm well!
I shot with my Sony a6000 and 50mm 1.8, WAY to close to Matt’s face. I went black and white because I didn’t understand balancing color and skintone yet, and also because I was in love with and portrait works.
A short while later, I was experiencing a very expedited learning curve with photography and gambling any money I had on top of the line cameras and lenses. When the gambling was beginning to pay off, I gifted this 50mm lens to Hunter so that he could snipe some sharper images of his kids than his kit lens was producing.

I’ve got so much enthusiasm for chasing lifestyle photography in less familiar spaces.
And I’ve had some of the most exciting opportunities to lean into learning new workflow while hunting out the quiet sides of city life with // 🙏🏽❤️

Here’s a quick selection of favourite captures while looking at what the light does in unfamiliar spaces.

I love the challenge of connecting with people in their passion and place - so I’m way stoked to be doing it again this week… but on bikes!!!

I’ve been really enjoying spending time watching eagles lately.
They’re really beautiful creatures and it’s fun to listen as they whistle amongst themselves and fish the along the riverbanks.
I’ve been using the Sony A1 for a few months now and the bird tracking situation melts my brain. What a time to be alive, and wow am I ever thankful to have the tools and free time to chase pictures like these

Cheers ‘22!
It’s been mostly about people, and remembering that people are the real reason I felt excited to pick up a camera in the first place.
People are my favourite part of every story… always more important than products, productivity, or performance.

Sometimes I joke that every photoshoot is an elaborate excuse to capture someone’s portrait. I’m not really joking though.

I love to imagine we’re all living in our own movies, and I love the challenge of capturing others in the middle of an elegant scene playing out.

Here’s a little slice of my favourite people-first pictures from the last year. They each deserve their own post, and I’m going to post + pursue portraits a lot more in the future.

I’m beyond flattered to see these images of friends, shredding and loving life between the ride,
appearing on paper alongside an interview about where I’m at in my life as a photographer and how big a role bikes still play in my day-to-day.
